Chicago is set to host its tenth annual Thirsty Ears Festival, a unique event that stands as the city’s sole classical music street festival. From August 23rd to 24th, 2025, Wilson Avenue, specifically the stretch between Ravenswood and Hermitage, will be transformed into a vibrant hub for music lovers of all ages.

This year marks a significant milestone for the festival, which has cultivated a reputation for making classical music accessible and enjoyable in an informal, outdoor setting. Organized by Access Contemporary Music (ACM), the Thirsty Ears Festival aims to break down traditional barriers associated with classical music, presenting it as a dynamic and engaging art form. Attendees are invited to explore a diverse musical landscape, from the intricate compositions of Baroque masters to the innovative sounds of contemporary artists.

The festival proudly features an impressive lineup of eighteen ensembles and soloists, promising a rich and varied auditory experience. Audiences can expect to hear music spanning centuries and styles, performed by talented musicians from Chicago and beyond. Highlights include performances from the Chicago Sinfonietta Brass Quintet, acclaimed banjoist Michael J. Miles performing Bach, hammered dulcimer player Joel Styzens, and festival favorites like Michael Hall. Other notable artists gracing the stages include Lakeshore Rush, Confluence Quartet, the Bach + Beethoven Experience, and pianist Alex Reyes, among many others. The programming is curated to showcase both established repertoire and new works, reflecting the evolving nature of classical music.

A special feature this year, and a recurring favorite, is the Mini Sound of Silent Film Festival scheduled for Saturday evening at 9:30 PM. This event pairs newly composed scores with silent films, offering a unique cross-disciplinary artistic experience.

More Than Just Music: A Community Gathering

Beyond the main stage, the Thirsty Ears Festival offers a comprehensive experience designed for the entire family. The Kids Zone will be a focal point, featuring an instrument petting zoo, sing-alongs, and engaging performances by artists like Laura Doherty, Jenny Viets, and Dawn Marie’s Toddler Jam. Face painting and other child-friendly activities will ensure younger attendees are entertained and inspired.

Complementing the musical offerings, festival-goers can enjoy a selection of craft beers from local brewer Dovetail Brewery, along with wine, a variety of food trucks offering diverse culinary options, and community vendor booths. This blend of music, food, and community spirit fosters a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can relax and enjoy the festivities.

The Vision Behind Thirsty Ears

Founded by Access Contemporary Music, spearheaded by its executive director Seth Boustead, the Thirsty Ears Festival emerged from a desire to create a unique niche among Chicago’s bustling summer street festivals. Boustead, also known for hosting the nationally syndicated radio program “Relevant Tones,” envisioned a festival that would present classical music in an approachable, non-stuffy environment, appealing to both seasoned classical aficionados and newcomers alike. The festival’s name itself reflects this open-minded approach, encouraging listeners to have “thirsty ears” for new sounds and experiences.

The festival takes place on Wilson Avenue, a familiar street in the Ravenswood neighborhood, ensuring a community-centric feel. In the event of inclement weather, performances are slated to move indoors to the nearby All Saints Church, guaranteeing the music continues uninterrupted. A $10 suggested donation is requested for entry, with all proceeds supporting the ACM School of Music, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering musical creativity.

The Thirsty Ears Festival represents a vibrant testament to Chicago’s rich cultural landscape, offering a delightful way for residents and visitors to enjoy exceptional classical music in a relaxed, community-oriented setting. It’s an opportunity to discover new artists, reconnect with beloved composers, and simply enjoy a weekend filled with beautiful melodies and shared experiences.
