The city of Chicago is set to become a vibrant hub of artistic expression once again with the return of the third annual Chicago Exhibition Weekend (CXW25). Scheduled to take place from September 19-21, 2025, this expanding event will feature 50 participating galleries and creative spaces, inviting locals and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the city’s dynamic cultural landscape. CXW25 aims to solidify Chicago’s reputation as a major player in the national art scene, moving beyond its historical perceptions and highlighting the vitality of its commercial art sector.

Organized by Gertie and EarlyWork, CXW25 builds upon the success of its previous iterations, with the 2024 event drawing approximately 5,000 attendees. This year’s expansion to 50 galleries signifies the growing momentum and diversity within Chicago’s art ecosystem. The event is designed not only to spotlight the work of artists and galleries but also to foster crucial connections, cultivate new collectors, broaden audiences, and enhance the global visibility of Chicago’s art community. By providing a concentrated weekend of art-focused activities, CXW25 seeks to energize and unite the city’s creative forces.

Key Partnerships and a Central Hub

This year’s Chicago Exhibition Weekend is distinguished by significant new partnerships with prominent cultural organizations, including Independent Curators International (ICI), the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB), and the Chicago Art Book Fair (CABF). These collaborations, alongside the established relationship with EXPO CHICAGO, are shaping a comprehensive program of ideas, routes, and reflections designed to capture the current energy of the Chicago art scene.

A central element of CXW25 will be its hub located at 400 N. Peoria Street. This space will serve as a nexus for public programs, feature the Chicago Art Book Fair, and host an anchor exhibition. Titled “Over My Head: Encounters with Conceptual Art in a Flyover City, 1984–2015,” this exhibition, curated by Iris Colburn and Gareth Thomas Kaye, delves into significant moments of Chicago’s art history. It aims to re-center Chicago’s often-overlooked role as a vital center for post-conceptual art in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, exploring themes of temporality, transmission, and memory through works from pioneering Chicago dealers and artists. The exhibition will be open to the public from its opening on Friday, September 19, through October 11, 2025.

Elevating Chicago’s Cultural Stature

A core mission of CXW25 is to actively challenge and dismantle the perception of Chicago as merely a “fly-over” city. By leveraging art history and contemporary artistic output, the event strives to demonstrate that Chicago has consistently been and continues to be a significant and vibrant player in the nation’s creative and cultural narrative. This initiative seeks to draw attention to the city’s unique artistic identity and its ongoing contributions to the global art dialogue.

Experience the Weekend: Explore, Engage, and Enjoy

CXW25 offers a multifaceted experience for art enthusiasts. Beyond the central hub and its anchor exhibition, attendees can explore a citywide network of participating galleries and creative spaces spread across Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. The programming includes exhibition openings, extended gallery hours, artist talks, tours, performances, and special events. Curated routes and recommendations are available, providing structured pathways for deeper engagement and encouraging visitors to explore different facets of the city’s art scene. This makes it easier than ever to plan your weekend and discover hidden gems. Whether you are a seasoned collector, an art student, or simply an admirer of creativity, CXW25 provides ample opportunities to engage with art, artists, and fellow enthusiasts. It is an invitation to explore Chicago’s burgeoning art market, enjoy its rich cultural offerings, and connect with its thriving artistic community.
