HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – The Chicago area recently concluded a landmark hosting of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Men’s Round Two, welcoming a record-breaking 39,500 spectators over five days. Held at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, the event showcased 12 intense matches featuring some of the world’s top national volleyball teams, underscoring the sport’s growing appeal in North America.

A Gathering of Global Volleyball Powerhouses

The tournament, which ran as a five-day pool, brought together a formidable lineup of elite teams, including the host United States, alongside powerhouses such as Poland, Brazil, Italy, Canada, and China. These nations competed in a high-stakes environment as part of the global VNL calendar, vying for crucial ranking points and momentum.

The event’s significance extends beyond its competitive matches. With an attendance figure of 39,500 across the tournament’s duration, the Hoffman Estates stop has been hailed as the largest international volleyball tournament held in North America, excluding the Olympic Games. This remarkable turnout highlights a robust and growing fanbase for the sport in the region, signalling a potential for further high-profile volleyball events on the continent.

The action from the NOW Arena was accessible to a wide audience, both domestically and internationally. Matches were broadcast on prominent television networks, including CBS and the Big Ten Network, providing significant exposure across the United States. Globally, the matches were streamed live on Volleyball World TV (VBTV).

VBTV reported substantial viewership numbers, with nearly 750,000 global viewers tuning in throughout the five-day period. This combination of strong in-arena attendance and extensive broadcast reach underscores the VNL’s status as a premier international sports property and the increasing global demand for competitive volleyball content.

Part of a Global Journey

The Hoffman Estates, Illinois stop was a pivotal stage in the 2025 Men’s VNL calendar. Following this successful North American leg, the tournament proceeds to Round Three, with matches scheduled to take place simultaneously in Gdansk (Poland), Ljubljana (Slovenia), and Chiba (Japan). These crucial matches will run from July 16-20, determining the final standings and qualification for the subsequent knockout stage.

The journey culminates in the highly anticipated Men’s Finals. The finals are scheduled to be held in Ningbo (China) from July 30 – August 3, where the top teams will compete for the coveted VNL title.

Signalling Growth and Popularity

The overwhelming response from fans in the Chicago area did not go unnoticed. Stephanie Giardina, Chief Revenue Officer at Volleyball World, the commercial partner of the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) and organizers of the VNL, commented on the significance of the turnout.

“The nearly 40,000 fans who came to the NOW Arena is a testament to the passion for volleyball in the United States and North America,” Giardina stated. “This record attendance demonstrates the growing popularity of the sport and its potential to attract large crowds for international events outside of the traditional Olympic cycle. It also highlights the VNL’s ability to bring world-class competition to diverse markets.”

The successful hosting of VNL Round Two in the Chicago area not only provided thrilling live sports action for thousands but also reinforced the city’s capability to host major international sporting events. The participation of top teams and the enthusiastic crowd reaction further solidify the VNL’s standing and offer positive indicators for the future growth and marketability of volleyball globally and specifically in North America.
