Curt’s Cafe Celebrates Grand Reopening in Evanston, Showcasing Local Art and Empowering Youth

October 30, 2025

Established in 2012 by Susan Trieschmann, Curt’s Cafe was born from a deep understanding of the critical needs of young people facing substantial obstacles. Trieschmann, who also co-founded the successful Chicago catering program Food for Thought, was driven to create a nurturing environment for youth involved with the justice system, recognizing job opportunities as their paramount concern. The organization has steadily evolved, concentrating on delivering comprehensive workforce and life skills training to individuals aged 15 to 24 who are navigating challenging circumstances, such as homelessness, food insecurity, and educational or legal issues. Operating as a fully functional eatery, the cafe provides breakfast, lunch, coffee, and catering, all while serving as a crucial hands-on training ground for its student-trainees, making the Curt’s Cafe Reopening a pivotal moment.

Revitalized Space for Growth and Community at Curt’s Cafe

The recent renovation, significantly aided by a $25,000 sustainability grant from Evanston, has impressively upgraded the cafe at 2922 Central St. into a more contemporary and inviting establishment. The expanded footprint now features enhanced, energy-efficient lighting and fresh, lively paint colors, cultivating an atmosphere conducive to both learning and community engagement. Even with the extensive construction, the cafe maintained operations on its west side, ensuring continuity of service for its dedicated patrons and uninterrupted training for its students. Rick Marsh, the board president, ceremoniously cut the ribbon, officially heralding a new era for this cherished youth empowerment cafe.

A Canvas for Local Art and Connection during Curt’s Cafe Reopening

Beyond the physical enhancements, the grand reopening introduced a notable new element: an exhibition space dedicated to celebrating local artwork. This initiative commenced with an impressive display featuring works from four artists connected to Evanston Made: Cie Bond, Fran Joy, Elizabeth O’Connor-Bolich, and Ren Picco-Freeman. Their varied pieces, spanning abstract nature scenes to compelling dance photography, now grace the cafe’s walls. This integration of art serves a dual purpose: it champions and honors the local art scene while simultaneously enriching the cafe’s atmosphere, making it an even more welcoming destination for patrons and a more inspiring setting for the young individuals it supports. The Curt’s Cafe Reopening truly embraces its role as an Evanston community hub.

Impactful Mission in the Restaurant Scene

Curt’s Cafe distinguishes itself through its tangible positive impact on the lives of its students and the wider community. Boasting an exceptionally low recidivism rate of 5% or less, a stark contrast to the state average exceeding 80% for youth, the program unequivocally demonstrates its effectiveness in guiding young people toward brighter futures. A remarkable eighty-two percent of students successfully secure employment or continue their education post-program completion. The organization estimates that its innovative approach yields significant taxpayer savings, approximately $140,433 per student annually, when contrasted with the costs associated with incarceration. By imparting culinary techniques, customer service skills, and fundamental life competencies, Curt’s Cafe not only prepares students for careers in the food service and restaurant industry but also cultivates self-assurance, stability, and a profound sense of purpose, making the Curt’s Cafe Reopening a beacon of hope. This non-profit restaurant is making a real difference by providing essential job skills for youth.

A Bright Future Ahead following Curt’s Cafe Reopening

The successful Curt’s Cafe Reopening in its beautifully renovated Evanston location symbolizes much more than a physical upgrade; it signifies a reinforced dedication to its foundational mission. By offering a supportive environment, comprehensive training, and a platform for local artists, Curt’s Cafe continues to serve as a vital nexus for personal development, community connection, and meaningful transformation. The incorporation of art into this rejuvenated space further solidifies its position as a place where optimism, opportunity, and creativity converge, truly embodying the spirit of its sustainable cafe renovation. The Curt’s Cafe Reopening is a testament to its ongoing commitment to the Evanston community hub and its youth.
