CHICAGO, IL – See Chicago Dance, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art form and increasing its visibility, has announced the return of its signature annual event, Chicago Dance Month. Now in its 12th iteration, the extensive celebration of dance across the city is scheduled to run from May 31 through June 28, offering a diverse array of performances, classes, and interactive experiences.

Timed just ahead of the organization’s own 20th anniversary in 2025, this year’s Chicago Dance Month underscores See Chicago Dance’s enduring commitment to fostering Chicago’s vibrant and varied dance landscape. The month-long initiative is designed not only to showcase the immense talent within the city’s dance community but also to provide numerous opportunities for artists and companies, many of which are freely accessible to the public, encouraging broader engagement with the art form.

Kicking Off the Celebration

The official launch of Chicago Dance Month is set to ignite the city’s cultural scene with a Kickoff Celebration on Saturday, May 31, at 3 p.m. This opening event will take place at the picturesque Navy Pier’s Lake Stage, located at 600 E. Grand Ave., promising an energetic start to four weeks of programmed events. The kickoff serves as a curtain-raiser, bringing together artists, enthusiasts, and the public to herald the arrival of this significant cultural event.

Recurring Highlights at Navy Pier

Navy Pier will serve as a central hub for recurring public programming throughout the month. Two distinct series are scheduled to take place at the pier’s Wave Wall Platform, also located at 600 E. Grand Ave., offering consistent opportunities for participation and viewership.

The popular free Pier Dance lessons are slated for Wednesdays throughout June, beginning on June 4 and continuing through June 25. These lessons provide accessible entry points for individuals of all skill levels to learn various dance styles. Each session will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., creating a unique atmosphere as participants learn and dance with the backdrop of the weekly Navy Pier fireworks display, which typically takes place on Wednesday evenings during the summer months.

Supplementing the lessons are free pop-up performances titled Wave Wall Moves. These impromptu showcases of diverse dance forms will enliven the Wave Wall Platform on Saturdays from June 7 to June 28, occurring between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. These performances offer passersby a spontaneous encounter with professional dance, highlighting the dynamic energy of Chicago’s artists.

Site-Specific Explorations: “On the Move”

Beyond the regular schedule at Navy Pier, Chicago Dance Month extends its reach into the city’s diverse neighborhoods with a series of site-specific performances known as “On the Move.” This program is designed to bring dance out of traditional theater settings and into unique public spaces, interacting with the environment.

These innovative performances are scheduled for Tuesdays, specifically on June 17 and June 24. Attendees can experience “On the Move” from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Palmisano Park, located at 2700 S. Halsted St. This series promises to offer audiences a distinct perspective on dance, engaging with the specific architecture and natural elements of the park setting.

A Platform for the Community

Chicago Dance Month is more than just a calendar of events; it is a critical platform for the city’s extensive network of dance companies and independent artists. By providing visibility and performance opportunities, particularly through the numerous free events, See Chicago Dance facilitates connections between artists and potential audiences, strengthens the dance ecosystem, and makes high-quality dance accessible to a broader segment of the population.

The initiative directly supports the growth and sustainability of Chicago’s dance scene, a sector known for its depth, innovation, and cultural significance. The focus on free events at highly visible public locations like Navy Pier and community parks like Palmisano Park lowers barriers to entry and invites new audiences to discover the power and beauty of dance.

Accessing Further Information

Individuals interested in exploring the full schedule of events, learning more about participating artists and companies, or finding details on how to attend specific performances and classes are encouraged to visit the official website for See Chicago Dance. Comprehensive information and updates can be found at SeeChicagoDance.org.

As Chicago Dance Month unfolds from May 31 to June 28, it promises to be a period of intense artistic activity and public engagement, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a major hub for dance and celebrating the diverse talent that thrives within its borders.
