Gaza Under Fire: Israeli Bombardment Continues Amid East Jerusalem Fatalities and Intensified West Bank Tensions

November 21, 2025

Israeli airstrikes have continued to pound the Gaza Strip, resulting in significant Palestinian fatalities. Recent reports indicate that the Israeli bombardment has killed dozens of Palestinians in a wave of post-ceasefire assaults, marking a serious escalation of the Gaza conflict. Officials at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis reported receiving bodies of numerous individuals, including women and children, following airstrikes that targeted tents sheltering displaced persons. In Gaza City, similar airstrikes claimed the lives of over a dozen people, including children and women. These actions have been condemned, with the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson expressing concern over the fragility of the ceasefire and stating that the killing of Palestinians in Gaza “needs to stop”. The overall death toll in Gaza since October 2023 has reached grim new heights, with figures indicating that at least 69,546 Palestinians have been killed and 170,833 injured as of November 21, 2025. The humanitarian crisis Gaza persists, with over a million people living in makeshift sites facing harsh conditions amid limited access to aid and a severe winter. The scale of the Gaza bombardment has raised serious international alarm.

Fatalities in Occupied East Jerusalem

Adding to the escalating violence, two Palestinian teenagers were shot and killed by Israeli forces in the Kafr Aqab neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem. The youths, identified as 18-year-old Amr Al-Marbou’ and 16-year-old Sami Mashaikh, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during an early morning Israeli military raid on Friday. Reports indicate that Israeli soldiers deployed snipers on building rooftops during the operation, leading to the fatal injuries. This incident underscores the heightened Israeli military operations throughout the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since the Gaza conflict erupted in October 2023, with at least 1,078 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied territory during this period.

Intensified West Bank Tensions and Settler Violence

The occupied West Bank has also been a focal point of escalating tensions, particularly due to a surge in Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians and their property. October 2025 saw an unprecedented number of such incidents, with the UN logging over 260 attacks, averaging eight per day. These attacks include the setting fire to agricultural storage rooms, vandalizing plant nurseries, and assaulting residents with batons and stones. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has condemned this settler violence as “shocking and serious,” crossing a “red line” and urging state authorities to act decisively. Despite such condemnations, reports suggest that Israeli authorities often make little effort to control settlers, with a very low rate of investigations leading to convictions. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli security forces and settlers have killed at least 1,017 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Political Landscape: The Stance on Palestinian Statehood

Amidst the ongoing violence, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his firm opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, even at the potential cost of normalization with Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu insists that a Palestinian state poses an “existential threat to Israel” and has vowed that it “will not be established”. This stance places him at odds with international efforts, including those from the United States, to promote a pathway to Palestinian statehood as part of a broader peace initiative. His hard-line coalition partners have also urged him to maintain a tough position, creating internal political pressure.

Broader Context and Casualties

The current surge in violence and political tensions is unfolding within the wider context of the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Since the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,139 deaths in Israel, the ensuing Israeli bombardment in Gaza has led to a devastating loss of Palestinian life. As of November 21, 2025, the overall death toll in Gaza has surpassed 69,546, with injuries affecting over 170,000. These figures represent a grave humanitarian catastrophe, with widespread destruction of infrastructure and dire living conditions for the surviving population. The current events are part of a trending news cycle that highlights the persistent instability and ongoing human cost of the conflict, with international bodies continuing to call for accountability and de-escalation. The continuous Gaza bombardment is a central feature of this tragic cycle.

The situation remains highly volatile, with the continuing bombardment of Gaza and fatal incidents in East Jerusalem underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and a lasting resolution to the conflict. The persistent West Bank tensions and the broader political disagreements over Palestinian statehood add further layers of complexity to an already dire situation, making this current news a focal point for international concern.
