OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.1 models, a significant upgrade to its flagship AI model series, introducing two distinct variants – GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking – designed to deliver more intelligent, conversational, and user-tailored experiences. This latest advancement in OpenAI AI models signals a continued push towards more nuanced and adaptive artificial intelligence, addressing user feedback for improved interaction styles and greater control over AI behavior. The rollout began on November 12, 2025, initially for paid subscribers, with wider access expected for free users in the coming days, showcasing the potential of the new GPT-5.1 release.

The GPT-5.1 family comprises two primary GPT-5.1 models: GPT-5.1 Instant, intended for everyday use and quick responses, and GPT-5.1 Thinking, designed for more complex reasoning and in-depth analysis. GPT-5.1 Instant is described as warmer, more intelligent, and significantly better at following user instructions. It introduces adaptive reasoning, allowing the GPT-5.1 models to dynamically decide when to dedicate more processing power to challenging questions, ensuring thoroughness without sacrificing speed for simpler queries. This capability has led to notable improvements in evaluations for math and coding, such as AIME 2025 and Codeforces, demonstrating enhanced AI reasoning capabilities.

GPT-5.1 Thinking, on the other hand, functions as the advanced reasoning model within the GPT-5.1 models suite. It has been optimized to be easier to understand, faster on simple tasks, and more persistent on complex ones. This variant offers clearer explanations, using less jargon, making technical concepts more accessible. The model also dynamically adjusts its thinking time, being approximately twice as fast on simple tasks and twice as slow on complex ones compared to its predecessor, GPT-5 Thinking. GPT-5.1 Auto serves as an overarching system that intelligently routes queries to the most suitable GPT-5.1 models, simplifying the user experience.

A More Conversational and Empathetic AI with GPT-5.1 Models

OpenAI has placed a strong emphasis on improving the conversational quality of its AI models with GPT-5.1. User feedback indicated a desire for AI that is not only smart but also enjoyable to interact with, a sentiment directly addressed in this release of GPT-5.1 models. GPT-5.1 Instant, in particular, defaults to a warmer, more natural, and empathetic tone, moving away from the sometimes dry or robotic responses that drew criticism for GPT-5. The GPT-5.1 models are now better at mirroring users’ preferred communication styles, making interactions feel more personal and human-like, paving the way for truly personalized AI chat.

Enhanced Customization Puts Users in Control of GPT-5.1 Models

A key feature of the GPT-5.1 update is the expansion of customization options for ChatGPT’s tone and personality within the GPT-5.1 models. Users can now select from an expanded list of presets, including Default, Friendly (formerly Listener), Efficient (formerly Robot), Professional, Candid, and Quirky. Beyond these presets, OpenAI is experimenting with more granular controls, allowing users to fine-tune characteristics such as conciseness, warmth, and emoji frequency. ChatGPT can also proactively suggest tone adjustments during conversations, offering a more intuitive and adaptive AI model customization experience. These user-centric controls aim to ensure ChatGPT aligns closely with individual preferences and varying conversational contexts, a hallmark of the GPT-5.1 release.

Availability and Future Outlook for GPT-5.1 Models

The GPT-5.1 models began rolling out on November 12, 2025, starting with paid subscribers of Pro, Plus, Go, and Business plans. Enterprise and Education plan customers will receive a seven-day early-access toggle. Free and logged-out users will gain access gradually over the following days to ensure stable performance. OpenAI has confirmed that GPT-5 will remain available in ChatGPT under a legacy models dropdown for paid subscribers for three months to allow users time to adapt. This news is a significant development in the field of AI technology, highlighting OpenAI’s commitment to iterative improvement and user experience in its ongoing quest to advance artificial intelligence. The company plans further enhancements to the GPT-5.1 series, including an upgrade to GPT-5.1 Pro soon, further solidifying the importance of these GPT-5.1 models.
