Netflix Launches “House of Guinness,” a Lavish Historical Drama Exploring Sibling Rivalry and Legacy

Dublin, Ireland – September 25, 2025 – The highly anticipated historical drama “House of Guinness” has officially premiered on Netflix today, offering viewers a deep dive into the tumultuous lives of the descendants of the legendary Guinness brewing empire. Created by Steven Knight, known for his work on “Peaky Blinders,” this eight-episode series promises a potent blend of family drama, power struggles, and 19th-century intrigue, drawing comparisons to modern hits like “Succession.”

“House of Guinness” is set in 1868 Dublin and New York, charting the dramatic aftermath of the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, a pivotal figure responsible for transforming the family brewery into a global powerhouse. Following his demise, his four adult children—Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Benjamin—are thrust into a complex battle for control over the vast brewing empire. The series explores the personal ambitions, secrets, and rivalries that emerge as they grapple with their inherited legacy and the volatile socio-political landscape of the era. Creator Steven Knight has described the narrative as exploring “inheritance and desire,” rooted in real historical events.

The Cast Behind the Dynasty

The series boasts a stellar cast bringing the historical figures to life. Anthony Boyle stars as Arthur Guinness, the eldest son who has spent time in London and must now contend with his inheritance. Louis Partridge portrays Edward Guinness, the youngest son who is eager to expand the brewery’s reach, particularly into North America. Emily Fairn plays Anne Plunket (née Guinness), the sole daughter, whose influence is navigated through social connections in an era where women had limited direct power in business. Fionn O’Shea embodies Benjamin Guinness, often depicted as the black sheep struggling with personal demons. The ensemble also features James Norton as Sean Rafferty, the brewery’s formidable foreman, alongside Jack Gleeson, Niamh McCormack, Seamus O’Hara, Dervla Kirwan, Michael McElhatton, Danielle Galligan, and David Wilmot.

Steven Knight’s Signature Style

Fans of Steven Knight’s previous acclaimed works, particularly “Peaky Blinders,” will find familiar stylistic elements in “House of Guinness.” The series incorporates Knight’s signature blend of historical drama with modern sensibilities, including a vibrant soundtrack featuring contemporary Irish artists like Fontaines D.C. and Kneecap. While the drama takes artistic liberties with the historical timeline and events, Knight emphasizes his commitment to remaining faithful to the truth of the characters themselves, stating that “reality always is so bonkers”. The show is noted for its distinctive visual identity, meticulous costume design, and the energy and swagger that have become hallmarks of Knight’s storytelling.

Historical Context and Creative Interpretation

“House of Guinness” delves into the rich history of one of Ireland’s most iconic families, set against the backdrop of 19th-century political unrest in Ireland and burgeoning industrial expansion in New York. The narrative touches upon the societal divisions fueled by the Protestant elite’s dominance over the Catholic majority, a significant aspect of the era. The series draws inspiration from actual individuals and occurrences, but it is presented as a dramatized interpretation, with a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode stating: “This fiction is inspired by a true story”. The historical backdrop includes the strategic business practices of Benjamin Guinness, who aggressively acquired rival breweries to expand the Guinness empire, and Edward Guinness’s later success in making the company a global giant.

Streaming and Reception

All eight episodes of “House of Guinness” are available for streaming on Netflix starting today, September 25, 2025. The series has premiered to a range of critical responses, with some critics praising its boldness and visual flair, while others have found it predictable or lacking in subtlety. Early reviews have highlighted the impressive cast performances and the compelling depiction of family dynamics and ambition. Many expect the show to be a significant streaming hit, appealing to fans of historical dramas and character-driven narratives, offering a fresh take on the legacy of a renowned dynasty.

The “House of Guinness” represents Netflix’s continued investment in high-quality historical Tv content, adding another compelling series to its growing library of international releases and original movies.
