The blizzard of January 1967 remains etched in Chicago’s memory as a benchmark of winter’s power. Over 23 inches of snow descended upon the city, a record for a single storm that still stands today. This wasn’t merely a heavy snowfall; it was a full-blown blizzard with winds gusting over 50 miles per hour, creating drifts as high as 15 feet. The storm struck unexpectedly during a workday, paralyzing transportation, stranding tens of thousands of vehicles and hundreds of buses, and shutting down both O’Hare and Midway airports. The economic toll was staggering, with an estimated $150 million in losses, marking it as the most significant economic disruption since the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Under Mayor Richard J. Daley, the city mobilized for an immense cleanup, but the event highlighted the vulnerabilities of urban infrastructure to extreme weather, prompting significant improvements in storm preparedness and snow removal strategies for the future.

The Political Avalanche of 1979

While the 1967 blizzard tested the city’s infrastructure, the blizzard of January 1979 proved to be a political earthquake. Approximately 20 to 21 inches of snow buried Chicago, but it was the city’s perceived sluggish and inadequate response under Mayor Michael Bilandic that truly mattered. Critics pointed to an insufficient snow removal plan and the Chicago Transit Authority’s struggles to keep operations moving, issues that became a central theme in the upcoming mayoral election. This storm became the pivotal wedge for challenger Jane Byrne, who artfully used the public’s frustration with the city’s handling of the snow to fuel her campaign against the entrenched Daley machine. Byrne’s victory marked a significant political upheaval, ushering in Chicago’s first female mayor and demonstrating how severe weather could profoundly alter the course of city leadership.

Modern Mayhem: Snowmageddon 2011

More recently, the “Snowmageddon” blizzard of January 2011 brought another dramatic winter challenge to Chicago. Hitting during rush hour on February 1st, the storm dumped over 20 inches of snow in many areas, creating scenes of chaos on major thoroughfares like Lake Shore Drive. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for hours, vividly documented through the nascent power of social media, which allowed real-time glimpses into the gridlock and the sheer scale of the storm’s impact. While Chicago had developed more robust response mechanisms by this time, the timing and ferocity of Snowmageddon underscored the enduring power of these winter events to disrupt urban life and create indelible memories.

Beyond the Snow: A City Shaped by Storms

Producer Eddie Griffin, speaking about the ‘Chicago Stories’ episode, noted that while blizzards are often remembered with a certain charm and nostalgia, they were also times of real consequence, tragedy, and lives irrevocably changed. The documentary aims to explore this duality, examining how these extreme weather events not only tested the city’s resilience but also influenced its development, its political narrative, and its very identity. From the record-breaking snows of 1967 to the political fallout of 1979 and the modern-day challenges of 2011, these storms have all left their mark on Chicago. Viewers are invited to explore these dramatic chapters of Chicago’s history and enjoy a deeper understanding of how nature’s fury has helped shape the city they know. The episode promises to offer a comprehensive scope of these iconic moments, reminding us that even in the face of overwhelming winter, Chicago’s spirit endures.

The new season of ‘Chicago Stories’ premieres September 26, 2025, on WTTW, wttw.com, and the PBS app.
