Chicago Ignites with Dual Art & Architecture Spectacles: Biennial and Exhibition Weekend Promise Transformative Experiences

Chicago is set to become a global nexus of artistic and architectural innovation this fall with the simultaneous staging of the highly anticipated Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) and the vibrant Chicago Exhibition Weekend (CXW). Running from September 19, 2025, the city will immerse itself in a rich tapestry of design, culture, and creativity, offering unparalleled opportunities for exploration and engagement.

Chicago Architecture Biennial: A Decade of ‘SHIFT’

The Chicago Architecture Biennial, now celebrating its tenth anniversary, stands as North America’s largest exhibition of contemporary architecture. For its sixth iteration, titled SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, the Biennial invites a global conversation about how design can respond to pressing societal, environmental, and cultural transformations. This year’s event is helmed by Artistic Director Florencia Rodriguez, an esteemed architect, writer, and educator, who is the Biennial’s first Latina Artistic Director. Rodriguez aims to position architecture not just as a discipline, but as a dynamic process of negotiation, speculation, and social impact.

Opening its central exhibition at the historic Chicago Cultural Center on September 19, 2025, the Biennial will extend its reach across dozens of sites throughout Chicago, featuring more than 100 multidisciplinary teams from over 30 countries. These exhibitions, installations, films, and dialogues, all free to the public, will explore urgent questions around housing, ecology, material innovation, and the impact of migration on urban environments. The Biennial’s expansive programming runs through February 28, 2026, allowing ample time for visitors to engage with its profound themes and diverse perspectives.

Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the Biennial’s significance, stating, “The Chicago Architecture Biennial is an exposition of ideas focused on the nexus of architecture and the societal issues that affect communities worldwide.” Since its inception in 2015, CAB has welcomed over 2.2 million visitors and showcased more than 400 projects, solidifying Chicago’s reputation as a crucible for radical ideas and inclusive design.

Chicago Exhibition Weekend: A Citywide Artistic Celebration

Complementing the Biennial’s architectural focus, the third annual Chicago Exhibition Weekend (CXW) will transform the city into a hub for contemporary art from September 19-21, 2025. This concentrated, three-day event aims to spotlight Chicago’s dynamic cultural landscape and artistic spirit, drawing locals and visitors alike to explore its thriving gallery scene and creative spaces.

With 50 participating galleries and creative spaces across the city, CXW is designed to encourage deeper engagement with Chicago’s art ecosystem. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore exhibitions, attend gallery openings, and participate in special events, talks, and performances. The event seeks to foster new connections between artists, gallerists, collectors, and the broader community, aiming to cultivate new collectors and heighten global visibility for Chicago’s arts scene.

A new central hub at 400 N. Peoria Street will anchor CXW 2025, featuring public programs and an anchor exhibition, “Over My Head: Encounters with Conceptual Art in a Flyover City, 1984–2015”. Curated routes will also be available, helping attendees navigate the diverse offerings and discover the full breadth of Chicago’s creativity.

A Legacy of Innovation and Culture

Chicago’s status as an architectural mecca is well-established, known globally as the birthplace of the skyscraper and a continuous innovator in building design since the Great Fire of 1871. This rich heritage provides a powerful backdrop for these concurrent events, underscoring the city’s deep-rooted connection to design and creativity. From the pioneering works of the Chicago School to the sleek modernist structures and contemporary marvels that define its skyline, the city itself is a living testament to architectural evolution.

Together, the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Chicago Exhibition Weekend promise an extraordinary period for the city, offering residents and visitors alike the chance to explore groundbreaking ideas, engage with diverse artistic expressions, and enjoy the profound cultural offerings that Chicago provides. It is an invitation to experience the past, present, and future of art and architecture in one of the world’s most inspiring cities.
