Chicago, IL – La Catedral Café and Restaurant, a culinary and cultural landmark rooted in the city’s vibrant Little Village neighborhood, has been bestowed a significant honor by the State of Illinois. The establishment was recently recognized by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Office of Tourism, welcoming it into the distinguished Illinois Made Makers program.

Selected as one of just 20 small businesses across the state for this year’s cohort, La Catedral Café is celebrated for embodying the rich tapestry of Illinois’s craftsmanship and culture through its unique offerings and community impact. The recognition underscores the state’s commitment to supporting diverse, locally owned businesses that contribute significantly to the identity and appeal of Illinois.

Acknowledging the Recognition

Chef-Owner Ambrocio “Bocho” Gonzalez expressed profound gratitude upon receiving the honor. His reaction highlighted not only personal achievement but also the broader significance of the recognition for the communities he serves and the dedicated individuals who work alongside him.

“This is more than just an award for the business; it’s a validation of the hard work and dedication of everyone at La Catedral, especially our staff,” Gonzalez stated. “It holds particular meaning for the Latino community, showing that our cultural contributions and entrepreneurial spirit are recognized and valued at the state level. We are incredibly thankful to the DCEO and the Illinois Made Makers program for this incredible opportunity.”

The Illinois Made Makers Program

Launched by the DCEO Office of Tourism, the Illinois Made Makers program is an annual initiative designed to spotlight and support businesses that create authentic Illinois products and experiences. The program deliberately seeks out locally owned enterprises that demonstrate a deep connection to the state’s heritage, artistry, and diverse cultural landscape.

The selection process emphasizes businesses that not only produce high-quality goods or services but also reflect the unique character of their locale and the state as a whole. Diversity and inclusion are core tenets of the program, ensuring that it represents the full spectrum of Illinois’s vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem.

By featuring these ‘Makers,’ the program aims to drive tourism, foster economic growth, and preserve the state’s unique cultural assets. Businesses chosen for the program benefit from increased visibility through state marketing channels and partnerships, helping them reach new customers and markets.

La Catedral’s Journey and Impact

La Catedral Café and Restaurant’s inclusion in the Illinois Made Makers program is a testament to its enduring cultural and culinary impact on Illinois. The journey of Chef Gonzalez, an immigrant who built the business from the ground up, is central to its narrative and success.

Starting with its original location in the heart of Chicago’s Little Village, La Catedral quickly became more than just an eating establishment; it evolved into a genuine neighborhood institution. It serves as a gathering place, a cultural hub, and a source of employment and pride within the community.

The success of the initial location led to expansion, with La Catedral now operating multiple locations across Chicago, including in North Lawndale, Brighton Park, and the Loop. Each location carries forward the spirit and quality that defined the original, bringing authentic experiences and flavors to broader segments of the city.

Chef Gonzalez’s story is often cited as an inspiring example of immigrant entrepreneurship and its positive impact on urban communities. His dedication to quality ingredients, traditional recipes, and creating a welcoming atmosphere has cemented La Catedral’s place in Chicago’s diverse culinary scene.

State Leadership’s Perspective

Kristin Richards, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), commented on the significance of the Illinois Made Makers program and the selection of businesses like La Catedral Café.

“The Illinois Made program is about celebrating the artisans, creators, and small business owners who define the unique character of our state,” Director Richards stated. “Businesses like La Catedral Café are vital to our communities, offering authentic experiences and embodying the spirit of Illinois innovation and culture. We are proud to support these Makers and share their stories with visitors and residents alike.”

The program highlights the importance of small businesses as engines of local economies and custodians of cultural heritage. By formally recognizing these establishments, the state aims to encourage tourism that is authentic and directly supports local communities.

Looking Ahead

The honor from the Illinois Made Makers program is expected to bring increased attention to La Catedral Café and Restaurant, further solidifying its reputation as a must-visit destination for those seeking genuine Chicago and Illinois experiences. For Chef Gonzalez and his team, it represents a significant milestone in their journey, validating years of hard work and dedication to their craft and their community.

As one of the 20 businesses welcomed into the program this year, La Catedral stands as a prime example of the diverse talent, creativity, and cultural richness that the Illinois Made Makers initiative seeks to champion, promising continued impact on Chicago’s culinary and cultural landscape.
