CHICAGO, IL – In a landmark performance that has rewritten the annals of American distance running, Conner Mantz has broken the 23-year-old U.S. marathon record at the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Mantz crossed the finish line in fourth place with an astounding time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 43 seconds, surpassing the previous mark set by Khalid Khannouchi in 2002. This News event has sent waves through the Sports world.

The 28-year-old from Utah had made no secret of his ambition to capture the American record, a goal he had been meticulously planning for. Mantz’s performance on the streets of Chicago was a masterclass in pacing and determination, showcasing his consistent progression on the marathon circuit. His previous performances, including a non-record-eligible 2:05:08 at the Boston Marathon earlier in 2025, had already signaled his readiness to challenge Khannouchi’s legendary time.

“It was a great feeling,” Mantz stated post-race, reflecting on his achievement. “It was great to run with Alex [Masai] for the last 10 miles. I couldn’t quite beat him but it was great feeling and a great race.”. He acknowledged that while he had not met his personal stretch goals of a podium finish or running under 2:04, he was immensely satisfied with breaking the record.

A Race for the Ages in Chicago

The 2025 Chicago Marathon was marked by fast times and exceptional performances across the board. The men’s elite race saw Ugandan sensation Jacob Kiplimo claim victory in an impressive 2:02:23, just shy of the world record. Kiplimo’s performance was a significant highlight, making his second marathon appearance a triumphant one.

Mantz’s fourth-place finish placed him ahead of several strong international competitors, solidifying his status not only as the fastest American marathoner but also as a top-tier global talent. He also set a new North American area record with his time. The Chicago Marathon, known for its fast and flat course, once again proved to be a premier destination for record-breaking runs and elite athletic feats, drawing global attention as a Trending Sports News event.

Mantz’s Journey to the Top

Mantz’s rise in distance running has been steady and remarkable. A two-time NCAA cross country champion at Brigham Young University, he transitioned to the marathon and quickly made his mark. In 2025 alone, he shattered the American half marathon record with a 59:17 at the Houston Half Marathon and achieved a highly respected fourth place at the Boston Marathon. His performances have been guided by coach Ed Eyestone, a former elite runner himself, who has helped Mantz reach new heights.

The race also saw a compelling women’s elite competition, with Ethiopia’s Hawi Feysa Gejia taking the win in 2:14:56, a significant personal best and a performance that placed her among the fastest women in history.

Mantz’s record-breaking run in Chicago is a pivotal moment for American marathon running. It cements his legacy and sets a new benchmark for future generations of athletes aiming for excellence on the world stage. The event underscores Chicago’s reputation as a city that hosts premier athletic competitions and generates significant Sports News.
