Iran Executes ‘Most Important’ Israeli Spy Amid Escalating Tensions and Wave of Executions

Iran announced on Monday, September 29, 2025, the execution of Bahman Choubi-asl, an individual described by the judiciary as “one of the most important spies for Israel in Iran.” The execution, confirmed by the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, marks a significant development in the ongoing covert conflict between Iran and Israel, occurring amidst a broader surge in executions within the Islamic Republic.

According to Iranian state media, Choubi-asl was accused of extensive cooperation with Israel’s Mossad intelligence service. The primary objective, as reported by Mizan, was to acquire the database of governmental institutions and compromise Iranian data centers. Additional goals reportedly included investigating the pathways for importing electronic equipment. Choubi-asl was allegedly involved in “sensitive telecommunications projects” and passed information regarding the import of electronic devices.

Escalation of Iran-Israel Hostilities

The execution follows a period of heightened tensions and direct conflict between Iran and Israel. In June 2025, Israel conducted a 12-day air campaign targeting military, government, and nuclear sites within Iran, resulting in significant casualties, including top military officials and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory. Since this direct confrontation, Iranian authorities have vowed to swiftly try and punish individuals accused of collaborating with Israel.

Rising Tide of Executions in Iran

Bahman Choubi-asl is the latest individual executed for alleged espionage on behalf of Israel. This execution is part of what human rights activists and monitoring groups describe as the largest wave of executions in Iran in decades. The judiciary’s news outlet, Mizan, stated that Choubi-asl’s Supreme Court mercy appeal was rejected, leading to the confirmation of his death sentence on charges of “corruption on earth”.

Earlier in September, Babak Shahbazi was also executed, accused of spying for Israel and selling information about Iranian data centers and security installations. However, human rights activists have disputed these claims, suggesting that Shahbazi was tortured into a false confession. Reports indicate that at least ten such executions have occurred in recent months, a trend that has intensified following the June conflict.

Broader Context and International Sanctions

This execution occurs as Iran faces renewed international pressure. The United Nations reimposed sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program over the weekend, a move that was followed by similar sanctions from the European Union. The current news cycle reflects the ongoing clandestine war between Iran and Israel, with espionage and counter-espionage operations forming a critical component of their adversarial relationship. Human rights organizations continue to voice concerns over the rapid pace of executions in Iran, warning that the death penalty is being used as a tool of repression. The scale of executions in 2025 has reportedly surpassed 1,000 individuals, according to some monitoring groups.

Official statements from Israel regarding the execution of Choubi-asl have not been immediately forthcoming. However, Israel has historically acknowledged conducting covert operations within Iran and assassinating figures linked to its nuclear program and military. The intricate intelligence war between the two nations continues to unfold, with this latest execution adding another layer to the escalating regional tensions. This is a developing story and ongoing news will continue to be reported. Current trends indicate a hardening stance from Iran on internal security and external threats.
