Chicago White Sox Infielder Miguel Vargas Lands on 10-Day IL with Left Hand Sprain; Tim Elko Recalled

The Chicago White Sox have placed infielder Miguel Vargas on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained left hand, a move announced Friday following an injury sustained during Thursday night’s game against the New York Yankees. The team is hopeful for a swift return for Vargas, who received positive news that his injury does not involve a break or fracture.

Incident Details and Vargas’s Condition

Vargas suffered the injury in the fifth inning of the White Sox’s 10-4 loss to the Yankees. While playing first base and attempting to stretch for a throw from third baseman Curtis Mead, Vargas collided with Yankees slugger Aaron Judge near the baseline. The impact resulted in Judge’s leg striking Vargas’s glove hand, causing the infielder to crumple to the ground in pain. His glove was dislodged upon impact.

Fortunately, initial medical evaluations have eased concerns about a more severe injury. “No break or fracture … so he’ll rehab over these next few days,” stated White Sox manager Will Venable. He added, “Obviously we put him on the IL, but hopeful that after his 10 days that he’s close and has progressed to the point where we can activate him.” Vargas himself expressed relief, saying, “It’s way better. I prayed for it to not have anything broken and be able to be here. I guess it’s good news and hopefully I’ll be back soon.”

Prior to the injury, Vargas had a productive outing, hitting his first career grand slam in the second inning of the game. This season, he has been a consistent contributor, batting .234 with 14 home runs and 52 RBIs across 121 games.

Impact on the White Sox Lineup and Roster Moves

Vargas’s placement on the injured list adds to the White Sox’s recent injury woes. The team also has center fielder Luis Robert Jr. on the IL with a left hamstring strain, an injury that could potentially sideline him for the remainder of the season. The absence of two key players presents a significant challenge for the Chicago squad.

To fill Vargas’s spot on the active roster, the White Sox recalled first baseman Tim Elko from Triple-A Charlotte. This marks Elko’s fourth stint with the major league club this season. Elko has shown power in the minor leagues, posting a .936 OPS with 24 home runs in Charlotte, though his major league numbers this season have been more modest, with a .145 batting average in 20 games.

Adding a positive note amidst the injury news, rookie shortstop Colson Montgomery returned to the lineup on Friday after missing two games with left side soreness. His return provides a boost as the team navigates these player absences.

Season Performance and Future Outlook

Miguel Vargas has been a notable presence for the White Sox this season. His ability to hit for power, as demonstrated by his 14 home runs and crucial grand slam, makes his absence keenly felt. The team’s strategy for managing his absence will likely involve adjustments to the lineup, with Elko expected to see significant playing time.

The current situation highlights a challenging period for the Chicago White Sox, with key offensive pieces sidelined. The team’s performance trending may be impacted by these injuries, making the swift and successful recovery of Vargas and other players crucial for their season aspirations.

As the White Sox continue their series against the New York Yankees, the focus will be on maintaining competitiveness while awaiting the return of their injured players. The club’s depth will be tested as they aim to overcome these setbacks in the ongoing sports news cycle.
