CBS Tunes Up New Reality Competition ‘The Road’ Featuring Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Taylor Sheridan This Fall

New York, NY – CBS is poised to launch a significant addition to its fall programming lineup with the announcement of “The Road,” a new music competition series designed to discover and elevate emerging talent.

Set to premiere on the CBS Television Network this fall, the series promises a unique blend of musical competition and documentary-style storytelling, following 12 aspiring artists on a journey through the demanding world of live music and touring. The ultimate prize for the winner is a potentially career-making opportunity: to open for global superstar Keith Urban at various music venues nationwide.

“The Road” is slated to air on Sundays from 9:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT, providing a primetime slot for the unscripted series. In a move reflecting contemporary viewing habits, the show will also be available for live and on-demand streaming on Paramount+, ensuring accessibility for a wide audience across multiple platforms.

A New Sound on Sundays

The series arrives as music-focused reality programming continues to resonate with viewers. “The Road” distinguishes itself with a format that moves beyond the typical studio-based competition, opting for a docu-follow approach that immerses audiences in the realities of life on tour. This perspective aims to offer an authentic look at the challenges, triumphs, and personal growth experienced by musicians navigating the complexities of the industry while actively pursuing their dreams.

The premise centers on 12 rising artists who are already seasoned performers, tasked with competing not just on their vocal talent or stage presence, but also on their ability to connect with audiences in real-world concert settings. The competition element is interwoven with the narrative of these artists living and traveling together, creating potential for compelling interpersonal dynamics alongside musical performances.

Star Power Behind the Scenes

The production boasts a high-profile team of executive producers, bringing significant weight and diverse expertise to the series. Among the executive producers are country music icon Blake Shelton, creator of the acclaimed “Yellowstone” universe Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser (known for his work with 101 Studios), Lee Metzger (associated with Shelton’s Lucky Horseshoe Productions), and headliner Keith Urban himself.

The collaboration of Shelton and Sheridan is particularly noteworthy, merging their respective backgrounds in music and narrative storytelling. Their involvement, alongside Glasser, Metzger, and Urban, suggests a production aiming for both high-quality musical content and engaging, character-driven television.

The series is a joint production effort involving several key entities: MTV Entertainment Studios, Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions, and Shelton’s Lucky Horseshoe Productions. This multi-studio partnership underscores the scale and ambition behind “The Road.”

Further adding a unique layer to the show’s structure is the involvement of Grammy-winning artist Gretchen Wilson, who will serve in the role of “Tour Manager.” This position hints at Wilson providing guidance, mentorship, or perhaps overseeing logistics and challenges presented to the artists throughout their journey, drawing on her extensive experience in the music industry, particularly in touring.

Meet the Inaugural Competitors

The first season of “The Road” introduces a diverse group of 12 artists, each looking for their major breakthrough. The competing artists featured in this inaugural season are:

* Adam Sanders
* Billie Jo Jones
* Blaine Bailey
* Briana Adams
* Britnee Kellogg
* Cassidy Daniels
* Channing Wilson
* Cody Hibbard
* Forrest McCurren
* Jenny Tolman
* Jon Wood
* Olivia Harms

These artists represent a range of styles and backgrounds within the broad spectrum of American roots and country-adjacent music, selected to showcase the depth of emerging talent currently working their way up through live performance circuits. Their individual stories and musical styles will be central to the docu-follow narrative.

The Journey Ahead

The core of the competition lies in the artists’ ability to perform and connect with live audiences across the country, mirroring the real-world challenges of building a music career. The docu-follow format allows cameras to capture not just the performances but also the behind-the-scenes struggles, collaborations, and personal moments that shape an artist’s journey on the road.

The prize – the chance to open for Keith Urban – represents a significant opportunity for exposure and validation. Urban is known for his dynamic live shows and widespread appeal, and sharing his stage nationwide could provide the winning artist with invaluable experience and access to a vast new fanbase.

Availability and Broadcast Details

Viewers can anticipate the premiere of “The Road” as part of CBS’s fall 2024 schedule. The consistent Sunday night timeslot (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET/PT) positions the show as a potential anchor for the network’s weekend programming.

The dual availability on both the traditional CBS Television Network broadcast and via streaming on Paramount+ addresses evolving media consumption patterns, making the series accessible to viewers whether they prefer linear television or on-demand digital viewing. This approach is standard for major network launches seeking maximum reach.

With a blend of competitive reality, authentic docu-follow elements, and significant star power both on and off screen, “The Road” is set to offer a unique take on the music competition genre this fall.
