Chicago Public Schools Unveils Comprehensive Strategy to Confront $734 Million Budget Deficit

August 14, 2025

Chicago has revealed its latest snowplow names. The city’s fourth annual “You Name a Snowplow” contest concluded recently. “Abolish ICE” emerged as the top vote-getter. This popular choice carried a political message. It was a clear jab at federal immigration policies. The contest saw record participation this year. Many residents engaged with this civic tradition. This annual news highlights Chicago’s creative spirit.

A Politically Charged Choice

The winning name “Abolish ICE” reflects a sentiment. It directly challenges U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This slogan gained prominence during protests. It specifically targeted former President Donald Trump’s administration. The “Operation Midway Blitz” in fall 2025 led to many arrests. This operation left a sour taste for many Chicago residents. “Abolish ICE” became a frequent refrain for critics. The city spokesperson noted its runaway success. “The people of Chicago clearly have no issue with the name of this snowplow,” they stated. Some online users preferred lighter, non-political names. However, the votes showed a different preference. The name’s double meaning resonated widely.

Creative and Trending Names Chosen

Beyond the political statement, other names also won. These choices showcased humor and local flair. “Stephen Coldbert” honored a popular personality. “Caleb Chilliams” paid tribute to a Chicago Bears quarterback. Other winning names included “Pope Frío XIV,” “The Blizzard of Oz,” and “Svencoolie.” These names add personality to the city’s winter fleet. They reflect a blend of pop culture and local references. In fact, these names become trending topics each year. Many residents look forward to the voting process.

Record Engagement in Annual Contest

This year’s contest broke previous records. Over 13,300 names were submitted. Additionally, 39,000 votes were cast. Mayor Brandon Johnson thanked Chicagoans. He praised their “unmatched creativity, sense of humor, and civic pride.” The contest aims to engage residents with city services. It makes municipal vehicles more relatable. The Department of Streets and Sanitation manages the snow fleet. They oversee more than 300 salt spreaders. The city also offers a real-time plow tracker online. This tool helps residents see snow removal progress.

How the Contest Works

The contest involves two phases. First, residents submit name suggestions. Then, the city selects 25 finalists. Chicagoans vote on these finalists. Voting for this year concluded on February 14. The six top vote-getters were announced on February 23. Residents who submitted the winning names receive rewards. They get a photo opportunity with their named snowplow. They also receive some city swag. This tradition has become a beloved part of Chicago’s winter.

A Tradition Continues

Previous years also featured memorable names. In 2024, winners included “Skilling It” and “CTRL-SALT-DELETE.” The 2023 winners featured “Mrs. O’Leary’s Plow” and “Sears Plower.” The “Abolish ICE” choice certainly stands out. It highlights how civic engagement can reflect political sentiment. The snowplow naming contest continues to be a popular event. It successfully connects the city with its residents. This news from Chicago shows a unique form of civic participation.
