ECOWAS Calls for Venezuela’s Sovereignty Amidst International Tensions

January 5, 2026

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced serious concern regarding recent events in Venezuela, emphasizing the critical importance of Venezuela Sovereignty. ECOWAS urges global respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty and calls for upholding its territorial integrity. The regional body issued a statement on Sunday, stating it is closely watching Venezuela’s situation amid rising international tensions. The bloc acknowledged a nation’s right to fight global crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking. However, ECOWAS cautioned against violating international law, asserting that such actions must not undermine sovereignty or harm territorial integrity. The group cited Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits force against another state and protects political independence, thereby reinforcing the principles of Venezuela Sovereignty. ECOWAS aligns with the African Union (AU), which released a statement on January 3, 2026, calling for restraint and urging inclusive dialogue for the Venezuelan people. The escalating crisis followed a US military operation on January 3, 2026, which led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They were reportedly flown to the United States, an action announced by President Donald Trump after US military strikes in Caracas. The ECOWAS statement emphasized solidarity and supports the Venezuelan people, urging all nations to respect Venezuela’s independence and its territorial integrity, underscoring the global need to uphold Venezuela Sovereignty. ECOWAS believes in peaceful processes, allowing Venezuelans to determine their own future through an inclusive process that upholds Venezuela Sovereignty. The complex situation in Venezuela involves international sanctions, disputed elections, institutional breakdown, and increased tensions from foreign actors, all of which affect governance, economic stability, and citizen welfare. The African Union previously stated its concern, monitoring the situation with grave concern and stressing principles of international law, with respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and self-determination rights being key to Venezuela Sovereignty. The AU called for dialogue, peaceful dispute resolution, and support for constitutional frameworks to foster cooperation and ensure peaceful coexistence, in line with the UN Charter. Other global bodies also reacted, with many EU countries urging respect for international law in response to the US military action. Hungary did not join this statement, calling for calm and restraint. The situation remains tense, with ECOWAS supporting the Venezuelan people and championing their right to self-determination. This trending news development highlights global diplomacy and the roles of regional bodies. Their statements aim for stability and adherence to international law, particularly concerning Venezuela Sovereignty. The future of Venezuela is uncertain, and dialogue and peace are crucial, reflecting the current view of ECOWAS as this news develops. ECOWAS aims to influence outcomes and promote a peaceful path forward, ensuring respect for Venezuela Sovereignty.
