Avondale Welcomes Moody’s Market: A Fusion of Seasonal Culinary Delights and Curated Vintage Finds in Chicago

Avondale, a vibrant Chicago neighborhood, has a new destination for discerning shoppers and food enthusiasts: Moody’s Market. Opening its doors at 2755 W. Belmont Ave., the market is poised to become a central hub for locally sourced goods, exquisite prepared food, and unique vintage home decor. This innovative concept aims to create an all-purpose community space, blending a fresh market experience with a curated retail offering.

A Culinary and Retail Hybrid for the Modern Palate

Moody’s Market distinguishes itself by emphasizing a harmonious blend of culinary excellence and artisanal retail. Shoppers can explore an array of prepared dishes, house-made sweets, and specialty sauces. The market’s food selection prioritizes seasonal vegetables, with a notable portion sourced directly from co-owner Alaine Johnson’s sister’s farm in Richmond, Illinois. This commitment to fresh, local produce ensures a constantly evolving menu, reflecting the best of what the region has to offer. Beyond the fresh ingredients, the shelves are stocked with thoughtfully sourced wine, fine pasta, and a selection of cheeses, catering to those looking to assemble a gourmet meal or discover new pantry staples. The market’s culinary philosophy, spearheaded by Head Chef Michael Portanova, focuses on creating delicious, approachable meals, with plans to rotate dishes quarterly, beginning with Italian and Spanish influences. He envisions a space where customers can effortlessly create a full, high-quality meal, stating, “You can grab a sauce, a protein, maybe something like blanched vegetables, and within 30 minutes you can make it a meal.”

Complementing the fresh food offerings is a captivating collection of vintage home goods and unique gifts. This curated selection includes everything from handmade ceramics by Portanova’s mother to candles crafted by Johnson’s mother, alongside plates and other distinctive household items. This thoughtful blend of edible and aesthetic goods creates a singular shopping experience, positioning Moody’s Market as more than just a grocery store, but a lifestyle destination.

The Visionaries Behind Moody’s

Moody’s Market is the brainchild of four long-time friends and co-owners: Mollie Mettelka, Michael Portanova, Melissa Korth, and Alaine Johnson. Each partner brings a distinct set of skills and passion to the venture, culminating in the market’s unique identity. Mollie Mettelka, an accomplished pastry chef, is responsible for the market’s delectable baked goods, including cookies, pie cups, tiramisu, and custom cakes, alongside Melissa Korth. Mettelka’s prior experience at the location’s previous tenants, Tutore and Pisolino, provided an invaluable understanding of the space and the Avondale community.

Michael Portanova, trained in classic French cuisine, leads the culinary operations, designing the rotating menu of prepared food and ensuring a high standard of quality. Alaine Johnson’s expertise in interior design is evident in the market’s carefully curated vintage collection, while Melissa Korth’s background in business and interior design further strengthens the market’s operational and aesthetic vision. The convergence of their diverse talents—from culinary arts and interior design to business acumen—allowed them to transform the concept into a reality in a remarkably short period, quitting their full-time jobs and preparing the market in less than two months.

Reimagining a Familiar Avondale Space

The market occupies a historically significant spot within the Avondale neighborhood, previously home to the Italian cooking school Tutore and, prior to that, Pisolino Restaurant and market. Pisolino Caffe, which opened in 2016, transitioned into a market in 2020 to adapt to the changing landscape during the pandemic but ultimately closed its doors in September 2022. Mollie Mettelka, having served as Executive Pastry Chef at Tutore, was uniquely positioned to see the potential in the vacant storefront. This history imbues Moody’s Market with a sense of continuity and evolution within the local business landscape. The transformation of the space signals a new chapter, promising a fresh and vibrant contribution to Avondale’s ongoing news of development and community enrichment.

More Than a Market: A Community Gathering Place

Beyond its offerings of gourmet food and unique goods, Moody’s Market is designed to be a true community hub. The owners envision the space as a versatile venue that can host communal dinners, private parties, and even offer engaging workshops such as cooking and knitting classes, and potentially movie nights. This commitment to fostering connections and providing diverse experiences underscores their mission to be an all-purpose market that serves the broader needs of the Avondale community. With its recent soft opening and a grand opening planned for Labor Day weekend, Moody’s Market is set to become a beloved fixture, inviting residents to linger, connect, and discover.

Moody’s Market represents an exciting new chapter for Avondale, blending the practicality of a neighborhood market with the allure of a specialty boutique. Its focus on seasonal, high-quality food, thoughtfully curated vintage items, and a strong community ethos promises to make it a cherished addition to the Chicago landscape.
