For decades, the iconic “Begin the Trail” sign for Route 66 was located at the intersection of Adams Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. However, with the highway’s centennial celebration, city officials, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, recognized the opportunity to create a more resonant and scenic starting point. The designation of Navy Pier, a beloved Chicago landmark drawing nearly 9 million visitors annually, offers a grander sense of arrival and departure, aligning with the spirit of adventure that Route 66 embodies. This strategic relocation honors Chicago’s historic role as the route’s eastern anchor while providing a more accessible and photogenic launchpad for travelers.

Pier-to-Pier: An Evolving American Journey

The shift to Navy Pier not only redefines the beginning of Route 66 but also solidifies a “pier-to-pier” narrative, mirroring the established endpoint at the Santa Monica Pier. This connection between two significant piers on opposite coasts aims to capture the true spirit of the American journey, symbolizing dreams, possibility, and the continuous evolution of this historic highway. Mayor Johnson stated that “Route 66 represents the ultimate American journey,” and the move to Navy Pier underscores its enduring relevance in American history, culture, and travel. The new Route 66 sign at Navy Pier serves as an iconic marker for the beginning of this legendary 2,448-mile adventure.

Centennial Celebrations and Roadside Attractions

The official designation of Navy Pier as the new starting point was celebrated with a dedication ceremony on March 25, 2026, coinciding with the annual Toast to Harry Caray. The event featured the unveiling of the new “Beginning of the Trail” sign and included a variety of “roadside attractions” to mark the occasion. These festivities highlighted the intersection of iconic American traditions, from the open road to America’s pastime, all amplified by the spirit of Harry Caray. The celebration also featured performances by the Plain White T’s, classic car displays, and memorabilia, further cementing the nostalgic appeal of Route 66.

Logistics and Traveler Experience

The move to Navy Pier is expected to benefit travelers by providing a more convenient and experience-rich starting point. With existing infrastructure, ample parking, and accessible public transportation links, Navy Pier offers logistical advantages over the previous downtown location. For travel agents, the new designation provides a clear and compelling narrative for planning Route 66 road trips, with the catchy tagline, “Start where the lake meets the road.” The photogenic setting and the centennial timing create an exciting opportunity for clients to embark on the Great American Road Trip.
