On August 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order implementing significant tariffs on a wide array of global trading partners. The new import duties, with rates varying from 10% to 41%, are scheduled to be enacted in seven days.
Specific tariffs include a 35% duty on many goods originating from Canada, a 50% duty on goods from Brazil, and a 25% duty on goods from India. Additionally, Taiwan will face a 20% tariff, and Switzerland will be subject to a 39% tariff. These measures impact 69 trading partners, with the administration noting that some nations had successfully negotiated tariff-reducing agreements, while others had not been afforded the opportunity to negotiate.
In the context of these international trade adjustments, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement affirming that the India-U.S. partnership has demonstrated resilience, successfully navigating several transitions. The MEA’s remarks suggest a stable diplomatic and economic relationship between the two nations despite the imposition of new U.S. trade policies.
