Jamaica is reeling from the impact of Hurricane Melissa, a monstrous Category 5 storm that made landfall on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Described as the most powerful hurricane to strike the island in over a century, Melissa brought catastrophic winds, torrential rainfall, and life-threatening storm surges, leaving a trail of widespread devastation across the nation. Sustained winds at landfall reached an astonishing 185 mph, tearing roofs off buildings and causing extensive damage to infrastructure. The slow-moving nature of the storm exacerbated its impact, leading to accumulations of up to 40 inches of rain in some areas, triggering severe flash flooding and numerous landslides, showcasing the immense Hurricane Jamaica devastation.

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa Devastates Jamaica; Cyclone Montha Weakens After Hitting India’s Andhra Pradesh Coast

October 29, 2025

Officials reported over 530,000 Jamaicans without power following the storm’s passage. Significant damage was reported to critical facilities, including sections of the Black River Hospital, which necessitated the evacuation of 75 patients. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness characterized the event as catastrophic, stating that no infrastructure in the region was built to withstand a Category 5 storm. The storm surge, estimated to be as high as 13 feet along Jamaica’s southern coast, compounded the destruction from this Hurricane Jamaica event. Following its impact on Jamaica, Melissa was forecast to continue its path toward eastern Cuba, expected to make landfall as an extremely dangerous major hurricane, and potentially affecting the Bahamas, a testament to the broad island impact of such powerful weather events.

Cyclone Montha Weakens After Landfall on Andhra Pradesh Coast

Meanwhile, on India’s eastern coast, Cyclone Montha made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, October 29, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued severe warnings for the region, anticipating heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds. The cyclone, which had intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm over the Bay of Bengal, weakened into a Cyclonic Storm after crossing the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, south of Kakinada.

Despite its weakening, the remnants of Cyclone Montha continued to bring significant rainfall to several districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Krishna, East Godavari, and West Godavari. Neighboring Odisha also experienced the storm’s effects, with reports of minor landslides and uprooted trees in some areas. Authorities in Andhra Pradesh undertook large-scale relief operations, evacuating nearly 76,000 people to safety and establishing medical camps. One fatality was reported in Andhra Pradesh due to a tree falling amidst strong winds. The IMD forecast that the storm would further weaken into a deep depression as it moved inland.

These concurrent major weather events highlight the volatile current weather patterns impacting global regions. The severity of Hurricane Melissa, particularly its Category 5 intensity and rapid intensification, is a significant trending topic in meteorological news related to Hurricane Jamaica. The coordinated response efforts and warnings issued by meteorological agencies like the IMD and the National Hurricane Center underscore the critical importance of timely information in mitigating disaster impacts. As news unfolds, the focus remains on the immediate aftermath and recovery efforts in Jamaica and the ongoing vigilance for potential impacts from Cyclone Montha’s remnants in India and surrounding areas. The global community is closely watching these developing situations, reflecting the interconnectedness of weather phenomena and their far-reaching consequences.

In Jamaica, agencies like the World Food Programme and the UN mobilized relief supplies, initiating sea-lift operations and coordinating logistics amidst the hazardous conditions following the Hurricane Jamaica disaster.
