Reggaeton King’s Unexpected Return: Daddy Yankee, Now DY, Releases Christian Track ‘Sonríele’ After Retirement

San Juan, Puerto Rico – Just over a year and a half after declaring his definitive exit from the music industry, Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, the global icon formerly known as Daddy Yankee, has signaled his return. The artist, who turned 49 this year, is back with a new song released under the moniker DY, marking a significant shift in both his artistic identity and musical direction.

Ayala Rodríguez had announced his retirement in December 2023, concluding his illustrious career with a final, poignant concert series in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the vibrant heart of reggaeton. For decades, he reigned as the genre’s undeniable “King of Reggaeton,” shaping its sound and propelling it onto the international stage with hits like “Gasolina,” “Dura,” and “Despacito.”

Reggaeton King’s Unexpected Return: Daddy Yankee, Now DY, Releases Christian Track ‘Sonríele’ After Retirement

July 10, 2025

The first hint of a potential comeback emerged on July 9, 2025, when the artist released a cryptic video on YouTube. The video featured New York-based actor Anthony Ramos, known for his roles in Hamilton and In the Heights, adding an element of intrigue and speculation among fans and media alike. The tease built anticipation for what many believed would be a return to his signature sound.

‘Sonríele’: A Christian Anthem

However, the subsequent release of the new song, titled ‘Sonríele’ (‘Smile’ [at life]), revealed a starkly different artistic path. While the track incorporates familiar Latin Caribbean rhythms reminiscent of his roots, its thematic core is distinctly Christian. This direction aligns directly with Ayala Rodríguez’s public conversion to Christianity in 2023, which he announced concurrently with his retirement, stating his intention to focus his future efforts on evangelization through his faith.

The lyrics of ‘Sonríele’ reflect this profound personal and spiritual transformation. Lines within the song directly reference his newfound faith and worldview, such as, “Blessings come to me/ I walk with the Nazarene. Thank you for all the good and the not-so-good.” These verses mark a significant departure from the typical themes explored during his tenure as Daddy Yankee, signaling a deliberate pivot towards inspirational and faith-based messaging.

Production and Distribution

The song is credited to Macrilet Rodríguez, professionally known as Marky. Marky is recognized within the music industry for his production work, particularly within the Christian music genre, further reinforcing the deliberate nature of Ayala Rodríguez’s new artistic endeavor and his choice of collaborators for this phase of his career.

Intriguingly, ‘Sonríele’ was released under the name DY and is not currently available on the official streaming platforms associated with the extensive Daddy Yankee catalog. This distribution decision has fueled speculation regarding the artist’s current professional arrangements and the management of his vast musical legacy.

Sources close to the situation suggest this unconventional release method could be linked to ongoing legal matters. Reports indicate a potential legal dispute with his ex-wife, Mireddys González, concerning the division of assets and the control of his corporate entities and the rights associated with the Daddy Yankee brand. Such complexities could necessitate the creation of a distinct identity and distribution channel for new music, separate from the established infrastructure tied to his former persona.

A New Chapter for a Legend

The return of Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, albeit under a new name and with a radically different artistic purpose, is a noteworthy development for the global music landscape. While he may no longer be creating the high-energy reggaeton anthems that defined an era, his decision to use his platform and musical talents for evangelization marks a significant, deeply personal evolution for one of Latin music’s most influential figures. Fans and observers will undoubtedly watch closely to see how this new chapter as DY unfolds and what impact his faith-driven music will have on his audience and the wider industry.
