CHICAGO – A late-night event outside a venue in Chicago’s upscale River North neighborhood devolved into tragedy early Thursday morning, July 3rd, when a drive-by shooting claimed the lives of four individuals and left 14 others wounded. The incident occurred around 11:02 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd, outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge, located at 311 W. Chicago Ave.

The venue was reportedly hosting a mixtape release party for the rapper Mello Buckzz at the time of the shooting. According to preliminary police reports, a dark-colored vehicle approached the location, and a person inside opened fire into a crowd gathered outside the restaurant before fleeing the scene.

The sudden eruption of violence shocked the bustling River North area and sent shockwaves through the city. First responders arrived quickly to a chaotic scene, tending to numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Victims Identified Amidst Investigation

The four fatalities included two men and two women. Authorities have identified two of the men killed as Leon Andrew Henry, aged 25, and Devonte Terrell Williamson, aged 23. The two women who died were identified as Taylor Walker and Aviance Drexler. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has been involved in processing the deceased and confirming identifications.

The injured ranged in age from 21 to 32 among all victims. The 14 wounded individuals sustained injuries of varying severity. Three women were reported to be in critical condition: a 24-year-old who suffered a gunshot wound to the back, a 25-year-old shot in the left leg, and a 21-year-old who sustained a gunshot wound to the mouth. Additionally, a 31-year-old woman was listed in serious condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. The remaining injured individuals were reported to be in fair to good condition.

Medical personnel transported the wounded to various hospitals across the city for treatment following the incident.

Venue’s Role and Community Impact

Artis Restaurant and Lounge, situated at 311 W. Chicago Ave., is a Black and LGBTQ-owned establishment that opened its doors in April. Following the shooting, the venue issued a statement via Instagram expressing profound sadness and describing the event as a “painful disruption” to their mission. The statement emphasized that the restaurant was created with the intention of being a safe space for the community.

The connection of the shooting to the mixtape release party for Mello Buckzz is a focus point as investigators work to understand the circumstances leading up to the violence.

Official Response and Calls for Closure

The severe nature of the incident prompted swift action from both law enforcement and local officials. Police temporarily shut down Artis Restaurant and Lounge on Thursday using a summary closure order as part of their ongoing investigation.

Alderman Brendan Reilly, who represents the 42nd Ward, where the shooting took place, has publicly called for the permanent closure of the establishment. Alderman Reilly’s call highlights the intense pressure placed on local businesses and city officials in the wake of such violent crimes, particularly in traditionally popular entertainment districts like River North.

The investigation into the motive behind the drive-by shooting is active and ongoing. As of the latest reports, authorities have not announced any arrests, and no suspects are in custody. Police are likely reviewing surveillance footage from the area and seeking witnesses to gain more information about the dark-colored vehicle and the individual responsible for the gunfire.

The mass shooting underscores the persistent challenges facing Chicago regarding gun violence, even in areas typically considered safer or more affluent. The tragedy has reignited discussions about public safety measures, the responsibilities of venue operators, and the complex factors contributing to violent crime in urban centers.

The community and city officials await further developments from the police investigation as they grapple with the aftermath of one of the most fatal single shooting incidents the River North neighborhood has seen in recent memory.
