Prime Video’s February 2024 Lineup: Must-Watch Releases

February 2, 2024

Among the most notable arrivals is the film “Sinners,” marking the latest collaboration between acclaimed writer/director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan. Known for their work together on projects like the “Creed” series and “Black Panther,” Coogler and Jordan venture into new territory with this period piece. Set in 1932 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the film features Jordan in a dual role, portraying twins caught up in a narrative centered on gangsters who encounter a vicious vampire. This genre-bending approach, combining historical setting, crime drama, and supernatural horror, positions “Sinners” as a unique offering. The film becomes available for streaming on Max starting July 4, 2025.

Netflix expands its action franchise library with the sequel “The Old Guard 2.” Directed by Victoria Mahoney, the film sees the return of the immortal warrior team. Charlize Theron reprises her role as Andy, alongside KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley. The sequel continues the saga of this clandestine group of mercenaries with the inability to die, picking up after the events of the first film which introduced the team and explored the complexities of their long existence and purpose in the modern world.

Another film debut this week is the action-comedy “Heads of State.” From director Ilya Naishuller, known for his high-octane style seen in films like “Hardcore Henry” and “Nobody,” this movie pairs John Cena and Idris Elba in leading roles. Cena stars as a newly appointed US President, while Elba plays the UK Prime Minister. The plot reportedly involves the unlikely duo being forced to team up in a globe-trotting adventure, blending political satire with explosive action and humor.

Returning Series and Family Entertainment

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed graphic novels can look forward to the return of “The Sandman” on Netflix with the release of “The Sandman, Season 2: Vol. 1.” The series, which adapts Gaiman’s beloved DC Comics/Vertigo series, continues the story of Dream of the Endless, portrayed by Tom Sturridge. This new installment promises to delve further into the complex mythology of the Dreaming and its inhabitants, as well as introducing prominent figures from mythology and folklore. Expected new characters in this volume include Orpheus, the legendary Greek musician, alongside Norse deities Loki, Odin, and Thor. The first season garnered significant attention for its faithful adaptation and visual style, setting high expectations for this continuation.

For younger audiences and family viewing, the animated adventure “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado” is also arriving. This film is described as a standalone sequel, bringing back the popular explorer character Dora. Samantha Lorraine voices Dora in this new quest. She is joined by her familiar companions, her cousin Diego and her loyal monkey pal Boots. The story centers on Dora, Diego, and Boots embarking on a treasure hunt to find the mythical Sol Dorado, promising a journey filled with exploration, puzzles, and positive messages suitable for its target demographic.

A Week of Varied Offerings

The confluence of these major titles underscores a significant week for streaming platforms. From the unique horror-tinged period piece of “Sinners” on Max to the return of established franchises like “The Old Guard” and “The Sandman” on Netflix, alongside the star-studded action-comedy “Heads of State” and the family-friendly “Dora” adventure, the releases commencing July 4, 2025, offer a wide spectrum of genres designed to appeal to diverse viewer preferences. Subscribers have a wealth of new content to explore as the week unfolds.
