Northwestern’s Luna’s Pub Opens Doors: Alcohol Returns to Campus, Fills Dining Gap

Luna’s Pub Northwestern celebrated its grand opening on January 6, 2026, at the Norris University Center. This marks a significant return, as Luna’s Pub Northwestern is Northwestern University’s first on-campus bar in decades. The pub welcomed students back for Winter Quarter with stunning lakefront views and free appetizer samples, all while jazz music filled the air. Luna’s Pub Northwestern is poised to become a favorite spot.

Norris Executive Director Corbin Smyth called it “your place”. The timing was specific, aligning with the first day of Winter Quarter and the return of students to campus. The opening of Luna’s Pub Northwestern follows closures of popular late-night restaurants in Evanston. Reza’s Restaurant closed in May, Bob’s Pizza in October, and Chili’s shuttered its doors in December. These closures left a noticeable void in student dining options.

Luna’s Pub Northwestern: A New Campus Hub

The pub aims to be a central hub for students, offering a new space to connect. The Norris University Center has long served as a social center, and renovations have created this new area for Luna’s Pub Northwestern. Funding for the project came from donations, and an outdoor patio is planned for May 15.

Luna’s Pub and Grill serves alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and hard seltzers, requiring patrons to be 21 or older with a valid ID. This offering is a notable development, as a former Norris bar, The Gathering Place, served alcohol from 1982-1992 but closed over 30 years ago due to concerns about underage drinking. Northwestern University has a complex history with alcohol policies, having been dry for over a century, making the return of alcohol service at Luna’s Pub Northwestern a significant shift.

Luna’s Pub Northwestern: Dining and Student Concerns

Luna’s Pub Northwestern offers a menu of gastropub favorites, such as bacon jam poutine and hot honey fried chicken sandwiches, alongside sampled nachos and pub pretzels. The establishment prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients, with Slagel Farms being one of its local vendors, contributing to the Evanston restaurant scene.

However, some students have expressed concerns regarding the menu prices, with one noting, ““$20 for a burger is insane.”” Many upperclassmen lack dining dollars on their meal plans, potentially meaning they will pay full price at Luna’s Pub Northwestern. Fortunately, the establishment does accept dining dollars and Cat Cash, providing some flexibility for students.

Programming and Atmosphere at Luna’s Pub Northwestern

Luna’s Pub Northwestern features a stage for performances and plans weekly events, including karaoke on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m., trivia nights on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m., and a variety show starting in February on Fridays. These activities are designed to draw students to this new campus bar.

The establishment offers comfortable seating and picturesque lakefront views, creating an ideal setting for relaxation and socialization. This project is part of broader renovations at the Norris University Center aimed at cultivating a vibrant campus hub that includes Luna’s Pub Northwestern.

Broader Context in Evanston

The opening of Luna’s Pub Northwestern also highlights shifts in the Evanston restaurant scene, particularly the recent closures of several popular spots that impacted student dining options. The presence of Luna’s Pub Northwestern may influence downtown foot traffic in Evanston, a vibrant college town adjacent to Chicago. While many local restaurants offer student discounts, this new campus restaurant provides a distinct alternative for students seeking on-campus convenience.

A New Era for Northwestern

Luna’s Pub Northwestern represents more than just a new addition to student dining options; it signifies the return of alcohol service to campus. It aims to foster community and serve as a central gathering place for the Northwestern University community. The news of Luna’s Pub Northwestern’s grand opening is significant for students, positioning it to become a key element of campus life, offering both food and a dynamic social atmosphere for years to come. This campus bar is a welcome addition for Northwestern.
