CHICAGO – A late-night gathering celebrating a musician’s new release turned into a scene of horrific violence in Chicago’s upscale River North neighborhood on Wednesday, July 2nd, resulting in four fatalities and leaving 14 others wounded. The mass shooting unfolded shortly after 11:00 p.m. outside Artis Restaurant, located at 311 W. Chicago Ave., where attendees had gathered for a mixtape release party for rapper Mello Buckzz.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred at approximately 11:02 p.m. when a dark-colored vehicle approached the location. A person inside the vehicle reportedly opened fire into a crowd standing outside the restaurant before the car quickly fled the scene. The sudden and brutal attack sent shockwaves through the normally bustling downtown area.

The casualties include four individuals who were tragically killed. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two of the deceased: Leon Andrew Henry, 25, and Devonte Terrell Williamson, 23. The identities of the other two victims were not immediately released.

Fourteen other individuals sustained injuries in the shooting. The victims range in age from 21 to 32 and include 13 women and five men. Several of the wounded were reported to be in critical or serious condition and were transported to various hospitals across the city, including Northwestern Hospital and Stroger Hospital, where medical staff are working to treat their extensive injuries.

Investigation Underway

Chicago Police Department detectives have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, appealing for witnesses and any available information. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are working to identify the vehicle and the perpetrator(s) involved.

Community activist Andrew Holmes has reportedly been assisting police efforts and indicated that suspects may have been traveling in a Black Honda equipped with 20-inch rims. Police have not publicly confirmed this specific detail, but are actively pursuing all leads.

Community and Official Response

The shooting has prompted strong reactions from local officials and the community. Downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly, who represents the 42nd Ward where the incident took place, has publicly called for the permanent closure of Artis Restaurant following the violence. Citing public safety concerns, police have already issued a temporary summary closure for the establishment as the investigation continues.

Residents and community leaders expressed profound sadness and outrage over the event, highlighting the ongoing challenges of gun violence in the city. The incident has been described by some as one of the worst mass shootings Chicago has experienced in several years, underscoring the scale of the tragedy and its impact on the community.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to search for the individual or individuals responsible for the deadly attack. The focus remains on bringing those accountable to justice and providing support to the victims and their families navigating the aftermath of this devastating event.
