Celebrating Culinary Excellence: Chicago Chefs and Restaurants Shine at the James Beard Awards

The James Beard Foundation has officially unveiled the finalists for its prestigious Restaurant and Chef Awards, and the spotlight shines brightly on Chicago with five local chefs and establishments making the cut. Among the first-time nominees are Galit and Kumiko, both of which have garnered admiration and accolades for their unique culinary offerings. This year marks a significant milestone as the James Beard Awards celebrate their 35th anniversary, recognizing the transformative role these awards play in honoring culinary excellence and shaping the evolution of American food culture.

Chicago’s Rising Stars in the Culinary Scene

Among the finalists, Kumiko, a Japanese dining bar located in the vibrant West Loop, stands out with its nomination for Outstanding Bar. Julia Momosé, the partner and creative director at Kumiko, expressed her excitement upon learning the news. “I was just doing some cleaning and repair stuff, and then my phone started blowing up — I was like ‘What’s happening?!’” she shared, clearly thrilled by the recognition. Kumiko received its first-ever semifinalist nomination in January, which already felt like a whirlwind experience for Momosé.

Reflecting on her journey, Momosé stated, “When I first opened Kumiko, awards were always one of those things that I was hopeful for, that the work we were doing would be recognized, someday — but not necessarily that we existed to win the awards. We just wanted to exist and simply be a reflection of the heart and dedication and care and talent and passion for hospitality and for food and for beverage.” This heartfelt sentiment underscores the dedication that Kumiko embodies, making it a worthy contender for the award.

Local Finalists Making Waves

Another notable finalist is Galit, which has been nominated for Outstanding Restaurant. Located in Lincoln Park, this Michelin-starred establishment has gained a reputation for its innovative Middle Eastern cuisine. Co-owner Andrés Clavero, who was busy with payroll when the nominations were announced, expressed his surprise and gratitude. “It’s truly surreal,” said Clavero, adding, “I’m not normally speechless. This is a crazy honor, and just to be nominated and in Chicago as well, hoping to make Chicago proud.” Galit has consistently impressed diners since earning its Michelin star in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and was also named the 2024 Restaurant of the Year by the Jean Banchet Awards.

Celebrating Best Chef Nominees

The Best Chef: Great Lakes category, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, features three esteemed Chicago finalists: Thai Dang of HaiSous, Chris Jung and Erling Wu-Bower of Maxwells Trading, and Noah Sandoval of Oriole. Each of these chefs brings their unique flair and culinary prowess to the table.

  • **Thai Dang of HaiSous**: This Vietnamese restaurant, which opened in Pilsen in 2017, has captured hearts with dishes like wings, crab fried rice, grilled eggplant, and unique interpretations of urban street food. Dang has previously been a semifinalist in this category four times, making this nomination a culmination of his hard work and dedication.
  • **Chris Jung and Erling Wu-Bower of Maxwells Trading**: Jung, a first-time James Beard Award finalist, described the moment he learned about the nomination as a mix of relief and joy, akin to a sports team winning a playoff game. “I would be lying if I said this wasn’t a dream of mine to be a finalist for a James Beard Award since I have been cooking professionally,” he noted. Maxwells Trading offers a harmonious blend of American and Asian influences, with dishes such as griddle bread inspired by Chinese scallion pancakes and Yamagata koshihikari rice.
  • **Noah Sandoval of Oriole**: Since opening in 2016, Oriole has garnered two Michelin stars and was awarded the 2022 Jean Banchet Award for Restaurant of the Year. Sandoval’s culinary skills have not gone unnoticed, as he is also a James Beard-nominated chef and was recognized as one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs in 2017.

Recognition Beyond the Awards

In addition to the nominations, the James Beard Foundation has also recognized Lem’s Bar-B-Q, a staple of the South Side’s Chatham neighborhood, as an “America’s Classic.” This honor celebrates locally and independently owned restaurants that possess timeless appeal, further emphasizing Chicago’s rich and diverse culinary landscape.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming awards ceremony, which will take place at Chicago’s Civic Opera House on June 16, the anticipation is palpable among the local culinary community. Last year, Chicago saw only one winner at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards, with Lula Cafe taking home the award for Outstanding Hospitality. This year, the stakes feel higher as multiple local establishments vie for recognition.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Chicago Dining

The James Beard Awards serve as a beacon of hope and recognition for chefs and restaurants striving for excellence in the culinary arts. As the finalists prepare for the big night, they reflect on the journey that has brought them to this point and the dedication that drives them to push culinary boundaries. The awards not only recognize individual achievements but also spotlight the vibrant food culture flourishing in Chicago, encouraging diners to explore and celebrate the diverse culinary offerings the city has to offer.

Conclusion

The James Beard Awards have long been a hallmark of culinary excellence in the United States, and this year’s finalists from Chicago exemplify the passion, creativity, and dedication that defines the city’s dining scene. From Kumiko’s innovative bar program to Galit’s unique Middle Eastern flavors, and the talented chefs of HaiSous, Maxwells Trading, and Oriole, Chicago is making a strong statement in the world of gastronomy. As the awards ceremony approaches, one thing is clear: the Windy City’s culinary talent is not just recognized but celebrated, inspiring chefs and food lovers alike to continue exploring the ever-evolving landscape of American cuisine.
