Ketel Marte in Tears After Fan’s Comment About Late Mother During Diamondbacks-White Sox Game

CHICAGO – Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was overcome with emotion, visibly weeping on the field during a game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The distress stemmed from a spectator in Chicago who reportedly directed a derogatory comment at the player regarding his late mother.

An Emotional Moment on the Field

The incident unfolded during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh inning at Guaranteed Rate Field. As the game paused, Marte was seen on the infield, sobbing uncontrollably, his face buried in his glove. The raw display of grief quickly drew the attention of his teammates and coaching staff, highlighting the profound impact of the fan’s words.

The deeply personal nature of the fan’s comment struck at the core of Marte’s private life. His mother, Elpidia Valdez, tragically died in a car accident in 2017 in the Dominican Republic. For a spectator to invoke such a sensitive and painful loss during a public event like a baseball game underscores the challenging environment athletes can sometimes face.

Managerial Support and Response

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo immediately recognized the severity of the situation and approached Marte to console him. Lovullo confirmed post-game that he heard the comment made by the fan. Describing the individual’s actions, Lovullo told Marte that the person was an ‘idiot’, offering support and validation for the player’s reaction.

Both Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister promptly requested the removal of the offending fan from the stadium. This swift action by the team’s leadership emphasized their commitment to protecting their players from targeted and abusive behavior originating from the stands. The incident reignited discussions around fan conduct and the boundaries of acceptable interaction between spectators and professional athletes.

Calls for Accountability and Action

The emotional toll on Marte was evident, and his teammates voiced strong support and condemnation of the fan’s actions. Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo spoke out forcefully on the matter. Perdomo called for the fan to face a permanent ban from the stadium, sending a clear message that such behavior should not be tolerated. He also urged Major League Baseball (MLB) to intervene, stating unequivocally that incidents of this nature ‘can’t happen’ in professional sports.

Perdomo’s call for MLB intervention reflects a broader concern within the league and among players’ associations regarding the increasing frequency and severity of abusive interactions from fans. While heckling is a traditional part of sports, comments targeting a player’s family, especially involving tragic loss, are widely considered beyond the pale and require decisive action from league and team officials.

Game Context and Player’s Silence

Despite the distressing episode, Ketel Marte had been contributing significantly to the Diamondbacks’ performance earlier in the game. He hit a solo home run, showcasing his skill on the field before the incident overshadowed the contest. The Arizona Diamondbacks went on to win the game against the Chicago White Sox with a final score of 4-1.

Following the game, through a team official, Ketel Marte declined to comment on the incident. This decision is understandable given the intensely personal and painful nature of the event, allowing him space to process the emotional impact privately rather than publicly addressing the fan’s remark.
