BROADVIEW, Ill. – Federal agents deployed pepper balls and tear gas against a crowd of protesters outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, west of CHICAGO, on Friday, September 26, 2025. The forceful dispersal marks a significant escalation in tensions surrounding the facility, which has become a focal point for demonstrations against the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement surge, dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz.”

The confrontation unfolded when a group of over 100 protesters attempted to block a vehicle from entering the ICE building. In response, federal agents repeatedly fired chemical agents into the crowd. Reports indicate that the pepper balls and tear gas canisters dispersed indiscriminately, affecting protesters who were standing at a considerable distance from the fence and not actively obstructing traffic. Some protesters described being caught off guard by the use of force, with eyewitnesses and participants detailing instances of coughing, difficulty breathing, and being struck by projectiles. Bushra Amiwala, an elected official from the Skokie Board of Education who was present, stated she was directly targeted with pepper balls while attaching notes of support to the facility’s fence, calling the use of chemical agents “fully unprovoked.”

Concerns Mount Over ‘De Facto Detention Center’ Conditions

For weeks, the Broadview ICE facility has been the site of recurring protests, driven by alarm over alleged inhumane conditions within the processing center. Activists, detainees’ families, and some elected officials describe the facility as a “de facto detention center” where individuals are reportedly held for up to five days without adequate access to showers, cafeterias, food, water, or necessary medication. Communication with legal counsel and families is also reported to be severely limited, leading some to call the facility a “black hole.” Erendira Rendón of The Resurrection Project highlighted that her organization has received legal aid requests from nearly 250 arrested immigrants, underscoring the significant number of individuals processed through or held at the site. While advocates claim up to 200 people can be held at a time, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have largely refuted these claims, stating that detainees are “briefly processed” before transfer.

Local Mayor Condemns ICE Actions, Cites Endangerment

The forceful tactics employed by federal agents have drawn sharp criticism from local officials. Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson issued a stern letter to the Department of Homeland Security, decrying the “relentless deployment of tear gas, pepper spray, mace, and rubber bullets” as an act of “making war” on her community. Mayor Thompson emphasized that ICE’s actions endangered nearby residents, as well as local police officers and firefighters who were allegedly exposed to chemical agents. The village has also demanded the removal of a new fence erected around the facility, which Mayor Thompson described as “illegally constructed” and obstructing access for emergency services.

Federal Authorities Defend Actions, Cite ‘Rioters’ and Threats

The Department of Homeland Security, while not directly commenting on the pepper ball and tear gas deployment, has characterized protesters as “rioters” and “sanctuary politicians” obstructing law enforcement. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that over 200 individuals blocked gates and 30 “swarmed” another, attempting to trespass. The agency also referenced a recent shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas, Texas, where a detainee was killed, suggesting increased threats against ICE personnel. DHS claimed one protester was arrested on Friday with a firearm, and that 17 protesters had been arrested in the week prior on multiple charges, though confusion has arisen regarding the prosecution of these arrests.

Broader Immigration Crackdown and Ongoing Protests

The events in Broadview are part of a larger, aggressive immigration enforcement push across the CHICAGO area and the nation, aimed at increasing deportations. This NEWS has garnered significant attention, making it a TOP story. Despite the federal response, demonstrations at the Broadview facility have continued with regularity, with organizers vowing to maintain their presence. The incident underscores the deepening divide and rising tensions between federal immigration authorities and communities opposing their policies. The increasing use of force and the persistent concerns over detainee welfare suggest that the situation at the Broadview ICE facility will remain a critical point of contention.

Conclusion

The clash at the Broadview ICE facility has ignited a fierce debate over federal immigration enforcement tactics and the conditions faced by detainees. As protests persist and local officials voice strong opposition, the use of chemical agents against demonstrators raises serious questions about the balance between law enforcement operations and civil liberties, making this a HEADLINE of national concern. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle to reconcile federal immigration policy with community values and rights.
