Filter Photo, a not-for-profit organization founded by artists, has been a cornerstone of the Chicago arts community since 2009. Its mission is twofold: to serve and support photographic artists, particularly in the Midwest, and to highlight Chicago as a significant center within the national photography landscape. The annual Filter Photo Festival represents the organization’s flagship initiative, evolving over 17 years into a comprehensive celebration that fosters meaningful dialogue and cultivates an inclusive community dedicated to advancing the medium. This year’s festival, headquartered at the Columbia College Chicago Student Center, is strategically located to allow easy access to numerous museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions, further embedding the event within the city’s artistic fabric.

Opportunities to Explore and Connect: The Festival’s Core Offerings

The 2025 Filter Photo Festival is meticulously designed to provide unparalleled opportunities for photographers to learn, connect, and grow. A central element remains the highly sought-after portfolio reviews, where emerging and established artists can present their work directly to a distinguished roster of local, national, and international photography professionals, including curators, gallery directors, editors, and publishers. These one-on-one sessions offer invaluable feedback, professional guidance, and potential career-launching connections.

Beyond portfolio reviews, the festival offers a diverse array of workshops designed to refine artistic skills and explore professional development. Topics are set to cover everything from translating photographic projects into book form to building powerful visual narratives and delving into experimental darkroom practices. Complementing these hands-on sessions are engaging artist talks and lectures. This year, the festival proudly features renowned artist Diana Markosian as a key evening speaker, promising an inspiring address for attendees. While portfolio reviews and workshops typically require advance registration and a fee, the festival generously offers much of its other programming, including many talks and exhibitions, free and open to the public, ensuring broad accessibility.

Exhibitions and Creative Showcases

This year’s festival will also highlight significant exhibitions, offering attendees a chance to engage with compelling photographic work. A special reception will be held at Filter Space gallery for two key exhibitions: “A layin’ on of hands…,” a solo exhibition by Alayna N. Pernell, and “On the Shelf 2025,” a photo book exhibition juried by Tim Carpenter. Additional exhibitions are scheduled to be hosted at the Filter Space gallery in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, further showcasing artists and their work.

A Hub for Community and Career Development

Filter Photo Festival is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all participants. Beyond scheduled events, opportunities for casual interaction abound, including informal “Roaming Reviews” and the dedicated Festival Lounge, designed to facilitate networking among peers, sponsors, and arts professionals. The organization emphasizes its dedication to accessibility, encouraging visitors needing accommodations to contact them in advance to ensure a supportive experience. Over its history, the festival has hosted an impressive array of influential keynote speakers, including Catherine Opie, Carrie Mae Weems, and Joel-Peter Witkin, underscoring its legacy of bringing significant voices in photography to Chicago.

The 2025 Filter Photo Festival invites photographers and art lovers alike to explore the depth of contemporary photographic art, connect with a vibrant community, and enjoy the rich cultural offerings that Chicago provides. It is an essential event for anyone looking to engage with photography at a professional and personal level.
