The week springs to life on Wednesday, August 20, with varied offerings. The Empty Bottle, a beloved Ukrainian Village institution, welcomes “Various Distractions” alongside live acts “temp.” and “Continuation,” complemented by DJ sets from Beau Wanzer and Bonestudy in an evening starting at 9 PM. Meanwhile, Ravinia Festival in Highland Park offers a more pastoral setting for music lovers. Their “Taste of Ravinia Farmers Market” will feature the lively sounds of Henhouse Prowlers, supported by special guests Almond & Olive, Noah’s Jam Jam Bourrée, and The Lucky Pickers on the Carousel Stage, blending local flavor with compelling bluegrass and folk.

Midweek Melodies: Thursday, August 21

Thursday, August 21, promises an array of free and ticketed events. The Austin Town Hall will host the “Future Folk Fest,” a collaborative initiative by The Old Town School of Folk Music and the Chicago Park District. This free daytime concert, running from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, is dedicated to celebrating and expanding the understanding of folk traditions across African, Caribbean, Latinx, and Indigenous diasporas. Attendees can enjoy performances by Ben Lamar Gay, Ugochi & A.S.E, Cuatro Vientos Mariachi, Laruni Hati, Ecos del Pacífico Afrocolombia, and Angel Melendez & the 911 Mambo Orchestra. For jazz enthusiasts, James Weir of Spun Out will debut his new project, Blue Earth Sound, with a free show at the California Clipper. Meanwhile, music icon Lenny Kravitz will take the stage at Ravinia’s Pavilion, and Americana artist Caleb Caudle performs at Judson & Moore Distillery in Avondale.

A Power-Packed Friday, August 22

Friday, August 22, marks a particularly busy night for live music. The Hideout in Bucktown will be celebrating the debut album release from Chicago folk-rock band Case Oats, joined by TV Buddha. Over at the Empty Bottle, local instrumental doom metal mainstays Bongripper will embark on the first of two weekend shows, with support from Pinebender and Cuss. For country fans, Nashville’s Teddy and the Rough Riders will bring their “smokin’ country” sound to Judson and Moore Distillery for a late-night honky tonk party. Ravinia continues its stellar season with country star Maren Morris, accompanied by Miya Folick, as part of The Dreamsicle Tour. Also kicking off this weekend is the free Chicago House Music Festival and Conference, running through Saturday, August 23, at Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center, featuring panels, workshops, dance lessons, and DJ sets celebrating the city’s globally influential genre. Judson & Moore will also host Sparkle Carcass and Angela Perley.

Weekend Highlights: Saturday, August 23 & Sunday, August 24

Saturday, August 23, offers one of the week’s standout events: the “Thalia Hall Free For All.” This all-day, free concert in Pilsen will transform Thalia Hall into a multi-stage experience, featuring Ratboys, Good Looks, Motel Breakfast, Nathan Graham, and more, with on-site donations encouraged to benefit the Pilsen Food Pantry. The Empty Bottle hosts the second night for Bongripper and Pinebender, this time joined by Varaha. The Hideout welcomes Emily McGill, a Chicago native now based in Australia, performing as Milou Moon with Lane Beckstrom for a homecoming show. Ravinia’s weekend is stacked, with Grammy-winning artist John Legend celebrating the 20th anniversary of his album Get Lifted on both Saturday and Sunday at the Pavilion. The festival also presents a “Tribute to Barbara Cook and Tony Bennett” on Saturday and Handel’s Alcina starring Nicole Cabell on Sunday. Additionally, the Thirsty Ears Festival, a street festival dedicated to classical music, begins its two-day run in Ravenswood, offering another avenue to enjoy the city’s diverse music scene.

Winding Down the Week: Monday, August 25 & Tuesday, August 26

As the week draws to a close, the energy remains high. On Monday, August 25, The Hideout features Texas jangle-pop band Paper Jam, along with National Photo Committee and Jason Shapiro. Capping off this dynamic week, Ravinia presents “Bach in Brazil” on Tuesday, August 26, showcasing guitarist Plínio Fernandes in a unique fusion of classical and Brazilian sounds.

This week in Chicago underscores the city’s enduring reputation as a live music hub. From intimate club shows to large-scale festival performances, the opportunities to explore diverse genres and enjoy world-class talent are abundant, truly cementing Chicago as a premier destination for music lovers.
