A major highlight of the weekend is the return of the NASCAR Street Race to the iconic Grant Park. This highly anticipated event transforms the downtown core into a temporary race circuit, bringing the thrill of professional stock car racing to an urban environment. The weekend features both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the premier NASCAR Cup Series races, drawing motorsport enthusiasts from across the region and beyond. In addition to the racing on track, the event offers a comprehensive entertainment experience, including live music with headliner Zac Brown Band, family-friendly activities, practice sessions, and qualifying races leading up to the main events. Access to the grounds is available with single-day passes starting at $99, providing entry to the festival area and various viewing opportunities.

Independence Day Celebrations Across the City

The first weekend of July naturally includes widespread celebrations for the Fourth of July. Residents and visitors can expect numerous 4th of July parades scheduled in various neighborhoods, offering traditional patriotic displays and community spirit. Evening skies will be lit up by firework shows, providing spectacular backdrops for the holiday. Adding a cinematic touch to the patriotic theme, the Ramova Theatre is hosting a special Brew & View event featuring a screening of the classic movie “Independence Day.” This marks a significant moment for the historic venue, representing its first movie screening in 40 years. Tickets for this unique event are priced at $12.29, which notably includes a drink, making it an accessible option for a holiday outing.

Arts, Theatre, and Music Scene Thrives

Chicago’s vibrant arts and culture scene presents several compelling options this weekend. Midsommer Flight, a local theatre company known for its accessible Shakespeare productions, is presenting free performances of Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost” in various Chicago parks. These open-air shows offer a delightful cultural experience in picturesque settings, including performances at Gross (Theodore) Park. These free productions continue through August 3rd, allowing ample opportunity to catch a show. Music lovers have options ranging from genre festivals to tribute nights. The Chicago Indiepopfest is taking place at the Montrose Saloon, showcasing independent music talent. Meanwhile, Wax Vinyl Bar and Ramen Shop is hosting a “Hotter Than July” event, a lively celebration paying tribute to the music of Stevie Wonder with live DJs. Tickets for this event start at $12.51.

Community Gatherings and Niche Events

Beyond the major festivals, the weekend calendar includes a variety of community-focused and niche events reflecting the city’s diverse interests. The South Side Hackerspace is hosting a free Block Party, Power Racing & Cookout. This community event celebrates DIY (Do It Yourself) culture, featuring a maker fair where enthusiasts can display their creations, a power racing competition promising unique thrills, grilling, and music for a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a prime example of Chicago’s active maker community. For those preferring active exploration, organized neighborhood bike rides are planned, offering a chance to see the city’s distinct areas on two wheels. Additionally, the South Side Pride Field Day provides a dedicated event for community connection and celebration.

With the combination of a major international sporting event, widespread national holiday festivities, and a rich tapestry of local arts, music, and community events, Chicago’s first weekend of July is poised to be exceptionally busy and engaging. Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their itineraries to make the most of the diverse offerings available across the city.
