CHICAGO – A late-night gathering in Chicago’s vibrant River North neighborhood turned into a scene of horrific violence Wednesday night, July 3rd, when a mass shooting outside Artis Restaurant and Lounge resulted in four fatalities and left 14 others wounded. The incident, which unfolded around 11 p.m. in the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue, occurred as a crowd was dispersing from an album release party for rapper Mello Buckzz.

The attack, described by police as a targeted act of violence, saw individuals in a dark vehicle drive past the location and open fire indiscriminately on the people standing on the sidewalk. The sudden eruption of gunfire sent shockwaves through the area, a district typically known for its bustling nightlife and entertainment venues.

Incident Details Unfold

According to initial reports from authorities, the dark vehicle approached the scene on West Chicago Avenue shortly before the shooting commenced. Three individuals, believed to have been inside the vehicle, are reported to have unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the crowd gathered outside the Artis Restaurant and Lounge. The speed and suddenness of the attack left little time for those targeted to react.

Police were quickly called to the scene following multiple reports of shots fired. First responders discovered a chaotic and tragic tableau, with numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds scattered near the entrance of the establishment. Emergency medical personnel immediately began rendering aid and coordinating the transport of the injured to nearby hospitals.

The human toll of the attack was significant. Authorities confirmed that four people were killed in the shooting. An additional 14 individuals sustained injuries, bringing the total number of victims to 18.

The victims range in age from 21 to 32 years old, highlighting the youth of those caught in the violence. Police have identified two of the men who were killed as 25-year-old Leon Andrew Henry and 23-year-old Devonte Terrell Williamson. Their identities were released as the investigation into the motive and perpetrators continued.

Of the 14 individuals wounded, four were reported to be in serious to critical condition upon arrival at medical facilities. The injured were transported to several area hospitals known for their trauma care capabilities, including Illinois Masonic, Mt. Sinai, Stroger, and Northwestern Memorial.

Official Response and Community Impact

The severity of the incident prompted a swift and strong condemnation from city officials. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the media, characterizing the shooting as “deplorable and cowardly.” Superintendent Snelling’s remarks underscored the outrage and frustration felt by law enforcement and the community in the wake of such a brazen act of violence in a public space.

The shooting in River North, a central and high-profile neighborhood, has reignited concerns about gun violence in Chicago. Events like the Mello Buckzz album release party draw significant numbers of people, and the fact that a seemingly celebratory occasion could turn so deadly has amplified anxieties among residents and visitors alike.

Investigation Underway

As of the latest information available, the vehicle involved in the shooting fled the scene immediately after the attack. Law enforcement has launched a large-scale investigation to locate the vehicle and apprehend the individuals responsible.

Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. The investigation is being led by Area Three Detectives, who are tasked with piecing together the events of the night, identifying the shooters, and determining the motive behind the violence. Detectives will be reviewing surveillance footage from the area, interviewing witnesses, and processing forensic evidence from the scene in their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

The search for the suspects is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
