Chicago News: Judge Cites Federal Agents’ Alleged Order Violations, Demands Accountability for Tear Gas Use

Chicago, IL – A federal judge has voiced serious concerns. She cited alleged violations of court orders. These violations involve federal agents using tear gas and riot control weapons. The actions targeted protestors and journalists in Chicago. This news is trending across the city.

U.S. District Court Judge Sara Ellis is leading the scrutiny. She ordered ICE Field Office Director Russell Hott to appear. He must address incidents where agents allegedly broke a court order. This order initially restricted tear gas and weapon use.

Judge’s Expanding Order

Judge Ellis is now broadening that order. It will require federal agents with body cameras to use them. They must operate them during law enforcement activities. This action follows a specific event. It happened on Chicago’s Southeast Side.

Border Patrol agents allegedly deployed tear gas. This occurred after a vehicle crash. The crash involved a man they claimed was in the country illegally. A U.S. citizen, Warren King, was detained during this incident. He identified himself as American.

Governor’s Strong Criticism

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized the federal immigration crackdown. He called it “creating mayhem.” Governor Pritzker supported Judge Ellis’s decision. He backed the requirement for federal agents to wear body cameras. He stated federal agents had lied about events. This news is popular among local residents.

Background of the Dispute

The initial court order was issued on October 9, 2025. It aimed to protect journalists and peaceful protesters. It banned tear gas and other force unless facing an immediate threat. It also required visible agent identification. This order was part of broader legal challenges. These challenges arose during “Operation Midway Blitz.” This was an ICE operation targeting undocumented immigrants.

However, reports indicated continued violations. Agents allegedly used tear gas without sufficient warnings. The Southeast Side incident on October 14, 2025, became a focal point. Border Patrol agents pursued a vehicle. The chase ended in a crash. As residents gathered, agents deployed tear gas. During this chaos, Warren King was detained. He was later released.

Judicial Scrutiny Intensifies

Judge Ellis expressed “profound concern.” She felt her order was not being followed. She summoned officials like Russell Hott and Greg Bovino. She accused government officials of lying under oath. She noted that agent conduct showed “no signs of stopping.”

In November 2025, she issued a preliminary injunction. This refined the order. It mandated agents give two warnings. Force was restricted unless “objectively necessary to stop an immediate threat.” She found federal agents’ accounts of events not credible. The judge stated it was “simply untrue” that Chicago was a hotbed of rioters.

Wider Implications

These events highlight ongoing tensions. They involve federal enforcement actions and civil liberties. Governor Pritzker’s office stated federal statements were often inaccurate. The demand for body cameras is a significant step. It aims to improve transparency and accountability.

While some lawsuits related to these events have seen dismissals, the core judicial concerns remain significant news. The use of force by federal agents continues to be a trending topic. It raises questions about constitutional rights in Chicago and beyond. The news underscores the importance of judicial oversight. It protects citizens and the press during federal operations. This is a critical development in Chicago news.
